Men's Soccer Falls to Nichols, 5-1

DUDLEY, Mass. (Sept. 21) – Sophomore Pat Gaumond (Holden, Mass.) deposited Nichols first two goals of the match en route to besting Anna Maria at home in a non-conference men's soccer contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Gaumond lit up the scoreboard in the 26th minute off a feed from junior Scott Coderre (Thompson, Conn.) who fired in a shot to the lower right corner of the net.  Anna Maria junior Allan Mugisha (Burlington, Mass.) evened the game back up just 4:21 later on a bicycle kick that soared just above the Nichols keeper. Gaumond then registered what proved to be the game-winning goal following a pass from senior Danny Smith (Verona, N.J.) at 31:08. Nichols held a slight margin on shots (12-10), corner kicks (3-2) and saves (6-4).

After the break, the AMCATS had a pair of excellent chances to tie up the contest. At 58:09 freshman Bryan Blomgren (Auburn, Mass.) took a penalty kick. Nichols senior netminder Brendan Hamilton (North Attleboro, Mass.) made the save to keep the hosts on top. Three minutes later, sophomore Mike Quirk (Rockfall, Conn.) had a one-on-one opportunity but the shot was, again, stopped by Hamilton.

Sophomore Brendan Whitson (Auburn, Mass.) added a goal for the Bison in the 65th minute. First-year Jonathan Silva (Framingham, Mass.) sent the ball from the left side of the box to setup Whitson's marker which found its way into the lower right corner of the net. Coderre netted his fifth tally of the season of a dish from rookie Michael Perry (Plainville, Mass.). The scoring was capped off by first-year Phil Mitto (Windsor, Conn.) who threaded a pass through the defense, from junior Joseph MacElveen (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), to the corner of the goal.

Nichols doubled up Anna Maria on shots (34-17) while also taking 10 corner kicks to the AMCATS three. The visitors held a slight edge making 13 saves while Nichols combined to stop 11.

Hamilton saw just under 77 minutes in net for the Bison and amassed eight saves. In relief, senior George Quireyns (Holbrook, Mass.) did not allow a goal on three shots during the balance of the contest.

Rookie Jeff Bolton (Williamsburg, Va.) collected 13 saves for the AMCATS.

Nichols (4-2-1) hosts Wentworth on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in a CCC matchup while Anna Maria (0-7-1) continues a four-game road trip with a visit to St. Joseph's of Maine in a GNAC contest also at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
