Men’s Soccer Falls to WPI

WORCESTER, MA - Anna Maria was defeated 2-0 by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a non-conference collegiate men's soccer match Sunday afternoon at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

With the loss, the AMCATS' overall record falls to 1-1 on the young season.

The first half was a stalemate, with neither side able to break through the opposing goalkeeper. Benjamin Le nearly struck in the fifth minute with a shot on goal, followed eight minutes later by a close header from Kyle Brocker that sailed just wide. Late in the half, Chris Zeppieri tested the keeper again, but WPI came up with another save.

WPI fired off 17 shots in total, putting six on target. Two of those finally broke through early in the second half, finding the back of the net in the 48th and 50th minutes, and giving the home team a lead Anna Maria couldn't overcome.

Romain Baert made his season debut in net for the AMCATS, making four saves in 90 minutes to keep Anna Maria within striking distance over the course of the contest.

AMCATS men's soccer opens up Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a road game against Bridgewater State on Saturday, September 6th, beginning at noon.
