Women's Basketball Topped by Southern Maine, 52-36, at Clark Holiday Invitational
WORCESTER, Mass.—The Anna Maria College women's basketball team trailed by just five points at halftime to the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine, but a 30-point second half led the Huskies to a 52-36 win against the AMCATS in day one of action at the Clark University Alumni Holiday Invitational.
With today's results, both teams now sit at 5-5 on the season.
AMCAT LEADERS
Anna Maria was led by junior Deja Taitt (Cambia Heights, N.Y.) with 13 points and four steals. Junior Nicole Mareiro (Acushnet, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds in her first start for the AMCATS this season. Classmate Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) also added eight points and three asissts, while senior Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) tallied eight rebounds off the bench.
SOUTHERN MAINE LEADERS
Megan Pelletier paced the Huskies with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. She shot 6-for-13 from the floor and added five points at the free-throw line on a 50 percent effort. Ella Ramonas added 10 points to the Husky offense, followed by Alexa Srolovitz with six points. Gretchen Anderson dished out five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies led for all but two minutes of the game but were unable to build a significant lead in the first half, as Anna Maria kept the score within five points in both of the first two quarters. Things turned in the Huskies favor in the third quarter, as they used a 15-9 advantage to break open an 11-point window.
Southern Maine would lead by as many as 17 in the final frame as they claimed the 52-36 victory.
FINAL COMPARISONS
The Huskies finished 19-50 from the floor (38 percent), besting Anna Maria's 23.2 percent effort (13-56). Southern Maine held a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint and a 13-2 edge in bench points.
Anna Maria also trailed Southern Maine in rebounds, 46-35.
