Freshmen Trio Leads Lacrosse to 24-7 Win against Wheelock

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's lacrosse team tallied their first win of the season, downing the Wildcats of Wheelock College 24-7 in non-conference action from AMCAT Field.

With the win, the AMCATS improve to 1-4, while the loss drops Wheelock to 0-2.

Leading the offensive effort for Anna Maria was led by a trio of freshmen, Michael Rodriguez (Cranston, R.I.), Andrew Marcotte (Plainville, Mass.), and Jonathan McDonald (Marlborough, Mass.), who all scored five goals apiece.

Freshman Donovan Riley-Robinson (Amherst, Mass.) paced the Wildcats with five goals, while Josh Simmons (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in with two. Austin Rindfuss (Sandwich, Mass.) was credited with an assist and tallied a team-high 13 ground balls for the Wildcats' defense.

The AMCATS got off to a slow start, as the first four-and-a-half minutes were scoreless before McDonald netted his first goal of the game. Anna Maria added three more goals under the four-minute mark before Wheelock's Riley-Robinson scored with 37 seconds to set bring the score to 4-1 after the first quarter.

Anna Maria held an 8-2 scoring edge in the second quarter. In the second half, the AMCATS outscored the Wildcats 12-4. The second half saw AMCAT freshmen Paul Mills (Auburn, Mass.) and Timothy Austin (Babylon, N.Y.) net their first collegiate goals.

The AMCATS forced Wheelock into 51 turnovers on the game. Senior Nathan Batallas (Templeton, Mass.) recorded a game-high 15 caused-turnovers and scooped up a team-best 11 ground balls.

Junior goaltender Joseph Morris (Medford, Mass.) tallied six saves to earn his first win in net. Wheelock rookie netminder Collin Davis (Alexandria, Va.) totaled 22 saves in defeat.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday when they host Massachusetts Maritime Academy in a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game at AMCAT Field.
