Pavoni Scores Five in Men's Lacrosse Win Over Nichols

PAXTON, MASS: The Anna Maria men's lacrosse team defeated nonconference opponent Nichols College in heavy rain this evening on Caparso Field to improve to 2-2 on the season.

 THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/3/2020

Score: Anna Maria 16, Nichols 12

Records: Nichols (1-3), Anna Maria (2-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The first quarter was back and forth between the two squads as it ended 3-2 in the AMCATS favor. The Bison got on the board first at the 10:23 mark on a Ryan Warner goal. Anna Maria responded just three minutes later when Tommy Girard (Newbury, MA) struck home. The other two goals scored by the 'CATS were credited to senior Brandon Pavoni (Ganby, MA).

-  The second quarter was a continuation of the close play with Nichols finding the back of the net three times to the AMCATS two. Hunter Ferreira started the scoring off in the second to tie it up 3-3 with 14:05 left. The next three goals consisted of man up opportunities for both teams with Anna Maria's Zion Mercado (Limerick, ME) retaking the lead 4-3 seven minutes later and scoring the final AMCAT goal in the first half for his second of the game. Ferreira netted his second of the contest as well to bring the game even at fives going into the half.  

-  Both teams offenses picked up their pace in the second half with there being a total of 18 goals throughout the third and fourth quarters. The third quarter consisted of Pavoni scoring three uncontested goals in a row tallying his five goals. Mercado picked up his third of the contest with the Bison's Ferreira picking up his third and fourth goals. Overall the third quarter was dominated by the AMCATS with them outscoring Nichols five to three.

- Anna Maria continued to dominate in the fourth scoring six goals with four in a row coming early on in the opening of the quarter. Cameron Perry (Coventry, RI) and Mercado both scored two goals in a row marking Mercado's fourth and fifth and Perry's first and second of the game. For Nichols Hunter Ferreira scored his fifth and game high sixth goal to close it out with the final of 16-12.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Griffin Jasin (L, 1-3) faced 28 shots on net and had 12 saves.

-  Gage Garcia (Newington, CT) faced 25 shots and tallied 13 saves.

-  Hunter Ferreira had 6 goals to lead all scoring.

- Brandon Pavoni had 8 points on 5 goals and 3 assists.

- Zion Mercado finished with another 5 goals for the AMCATS.

- Cameron Perry tallied 2 goals of his own while dishing out 5 assists.
