Clarke Leads AMCATS at Worcester City Invitational

Paxton, Mass.--Underscored by junior Taylor Days Merrill's (Fairhaven, MA) second place finish, Assumption had four in the top 10 to pace the Greyhounds to the 2014 Men's Worcester City Cross Country Championship this morning at Moore State Park.  

With 36 team points, Assumption won their fourth meet crown and ended a run by WPI of 20 consecutive Worcester City meet titles. The Engineers came in second with 51 points followed by Clark (63), Worcester State (94), Fitchburg State (113), Nichols (179) and UMass Boston (188).

Freshman Brady Phillips (Uxbridge, MA) of Worcester State impressed the field by winning the collegiate race with a time of 28:09.

Individually for the Greyhounds, freshman Thomas Drohan (W. Springfield, MA) placed third (28:28), junior Alex Smith (Ellington, CT) added fifth (28:55) and sophomore Zachary Szymokowwicz (Coventry, RI) notched eighth (29:20).

Senior Joseph Kelly (Brooklyn Park, MN) paced the second-place Boynton Hillers with fifth as junior Anthony Gallo (Rocky Hill, CT) and senior Michael McMahon (Pembroke, MA) took home ninth (29:36) and tenth (29:39), respectively.

The top 10 was rounded out by freshman Brian Amaral (Tewksbury, MA) of Fitchburg State who was the third first-year student-athlete to cross the line in fifth (28:51) and junior John Allard (Smithfield, RI) of Clark registered seventh (29:05).

Freshman Pat Clark (Pomfret, CT) propelled the AMCATS with 32nd (31:37), sophomore Stephan Davis (Southbury, CT) wasn't too far behind in 34th for Nichols (32:02) and senior Travis Delaney (Halifax, MA) recorded 42nd for UMass Boston.
