Sammons’ Goal Leads Women’s Ice Hockey Over Assumption

MARLBORO, MA: The Anna Maria College women's ice hockey team won 3-1 over visiting Assumption University on Saturday evening in Eastern Collegiate Hockey Alliance (ECHA) action at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, November 27, 2021
  • Score: Anna Maria 3, Assumption 1
  • Records: Greyhounds of Assumption 1-2, 1-2 ECHA | AMCATS of Anna Maria 3-5-1, 2-0 ECHA

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The AMCATS would strike first 12:38 into the first period, as Anna Maria senior forward Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) scored her second goal of the season, assisted by junior defender Ashley Dickinson (Bowmanville, ON), giving the home team a 1-0 lead.
  • Anna Maria picked up an insurance goal in the second period, as junior forward Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) scored her second goal of the season on an unassisted shot. Sammons leads the AMCATS in points on the season with six. Sammons' goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner.
  • The Greyhounds attempted to rally in the third period, scoring just 40 seconds in off a goal from sophomore forward Jacqueline Poulack (Natick, MA), assisted by sophomore forward Nora Birmingham (Ellington, CT).
  • Assumption kept up the aggression, looking for the tie-breaker. Pulling the goalie in the final minutes, however, allowed Anna Maria to put the game away off an empty netter from senior forward Niamh Cote (Tewksbury, MA), assisted by sophomore forward Shayla MacDonald (Victoria, BC) and Sammons.
  • Anna Maria junior goalkeeper Sam Dahill (Littleton, MA) completed the near shutout with 22 saves.
