Cougars Sneak Past Softball 3-2

FT. MYERS, FL: On Sunday March 3rd, the Anna Maria College Softball played a game against a non-conference opponent at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the North Collier Sports Complex. 

THE BASICS: 

  • Date: Sunday, March 3, 2023 
  • Game 1: Clark University 3 Anna Maria 2 
  • Records: Clark University 0-1 | Anna Maria AMCATS 1-4 

HIGHLIGHTS: 

The Clark Cougars would be the first to strike in the third inning as both pitcher would go back and forth firing strikes and making plays. In the third inning the cougars would start as there leadoff batter Samantha Crowley walked to get on base and Emelie Spence doubled and that would result in Samantha Crowley to advance to third. The AMCATS would walk Rebecca Mauro to load the bases for the Cougars. Felicia Salvati for the Cougars would single and score Samantha Crowley scored. The Cougars would take the lead 1-0 against the AMCATS in the third inning. The Cougars would strike again with the bases loaded in the third when Magdalena Barthel reached on a fielder's choice, and Emelie Spence would score. That would lead the AMCATS to have to fight their way back against the Cougars. It would be the sixth inning, where the AMCATS would strike to cut the Cougars lead to one run. It would be Shay Savoie who would get on with a walk, and then use her quick speed to steal second and third to be in scoring position for the AMCATS. It would then be an error from the Cougars that would score Shay Savoie that would lead the AMCATS to only be losing by one run. It would not take the Cougars long to regain the two-run lead back in the top of the seventh inning Emelie Spence tripled and would then score on an error by the AMCATS to increase the Cougars lead back by two runs. It is now 3 to 1, and the AMCATS would have one more chance with the bats to catch the Cougars. The AMCATS would start the inning with a walk, Zoey Lain would come in to pinch run and steal second getting herself into scoring position for the AMCATS. It would be Madison Marie Romano to hit a rocket to center field and double for the AMCATS that would score Zoey Lain, cutting the Cougars lead once again to only one run. The AMCATS rally would fall short as the Cougars would get out of the seventh inning, winning the game 3 to 2. 

UP NEXT: 

Anna Maria will continue their spring break trip with two more games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The first pitch of the first game will be against the Rockford University at 9 AM and the second game will follow at 11 AM for a rematch against the Clark University Cougars.
