NORTHFIELD, VT: The Anna Maria College softball team swept a doubleheader against Norwich University on Sunday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action in Northfield.

TURNING POINT:

  • GAME ONE – The AMCATS came back from a 4-1 deficit, scoring nine unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings. A two-base error by the Norwich third baseman on a ball hit by sophomore catcher Saylor Costa (E. Providence, RI) brought home two runs to cut the Cadets' lead to one run. Senior pitcher Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) put the AMCATS ahead for good with a two-run double that scored Costa and pinch-runner Samantha Rintoul-Bonneau (Worcester, MA).
  • GAME TWO – The AMCATS never trailed in this game. Scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI single through the right side by Costa that scored senior second baseman Michelle Cilley (Dracut, MA) who had doubled to right to lead off the game. The Cadets evened the score in the second on a squeeze bunt by for the only run allowed by Liston. In the sixth inning, the AMCATS broke the game open with six runs. The big blow was a bases-clearing three-run double by sophomore right fielder Kiara Edmonds (Lynn, MA).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cilley was 4-10 on the day with a double and an RBI in each game. Her RBI single in the seventh inning of game two capped the AMCATS 17 run day when she drove in Edmonds from third.
  • All three of Liston's hits went for doubles and she collected two RBIs while recording the wins in both games. Overall Liston threw 14 innings to complete both games with nine strikeouts.
  • Sophomore shortstop Eden Forget (Worcester, MA) combined to go 5-7 with a run scored and two more driven in.
  • Costa was 4-8 with three driven in, two runs scored, and a stolen base.

UP NEXT:

The AMCATS will return to the field on Wednesday when they return home to host a doubleheader against Roger Williams University. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
