Men’s Basketball Opens Season By Sinking Mariners

NEW LONDON, CT: The Anna Maria College men's basketball team opened their 2021-2022 season with a 95-85 win at Mitchell College on Wednesday evening in New London, Connecticut.

THE BASICS:

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • All five AMCAT starters scored in double-figures, with Anna Maria sophomore guard Jakai Alexandre (Fitchburg, MA) leading the way. The rookie guard had a spectacular debut to his collegiate career, leading the AMCATS with 19 points while dishing out nine assists, five rebounds and two blocks.  
  • Anna Maria sophomore forward Gabe Armstead (Dallas, GA) dominated the paint with 17 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, shooting 50 percent from the floor.
  • Anna Maria senior guard and team captain Kennedy Minix-Rogers (Smyrna, GA), one of the AMCATS' top returners,  finished with 15 points, six assists, four boards and two steals.
  • Mitchell senior forward Jacob Tully (Old Saybrook, CT) led all scorers with 20 points to go along with five rebounds for the Mariners.
  • Anna Maria held a 55-46 edge in rebounding, as well as a 38.5 percent to 23.1 percent in three-point shooting.

 

TURNING POINT:

  • The game was hotly contested throughout, with the AMCATS finally opening up a 12 point lead with 5:07 to go in the game after a pair of free throws by Alexandre. The Mariners would rally, going on a 8-2 run and finally pulling to within three off a layup from Mitchell junior guard Mikey Buscetto (Waterford, CT). But Minix-Rogers answered with a jumper at the other end and Anna Maria closed out the game on a 10-3 run

 

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back on the court on Saturday when they travel to Nichols College for a 3:00 p.m. matchup of cross-county rivals.
