AMCATS edged by Falcons

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January  21, 2012) –  Ray Askew (Hamden, Conn.) scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Albertus Magnus men's basketball team over Anna Maria by a score of 71-51 on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. With his fourth rebound at the 10:07 mark of the first half, Askew became the Albertus Magnus all-time leader in rebounds with 1,037.

The senior led the Falcons in today's victory with not only his 12 points but with his defending as well. Askew recorded three steals and seven defensive rebounds and he finished the day 3-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Anna Maria was led by the senior Brad Peterson who tossed in 11 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Juniors Anthony Click had a game-high 11 rebounds and Javier Bristol scored 10 points. Hugh Daye added 7 points off the bench.

With the win, Albertus improves to an unblemished 9-0 record in the GNAC and move to 14-1 overall. Anna Maria falls to 6-9 on the year and 5-4 in the league as they picked up their third loss in four games.

Albertus began the afternoon with an 8-0 run in the opening four minutes before extending their lead to as much as 23 in the first half. The Falcons' largest lead of the game came with 9:58 left on the clock in the second half as they took a 26-point advantage.

Arshad Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) added eight points and five rebounds for the Falcons, while Zach Dugas (Monroe, Conn.) scored 12 points for the second time in as many games.

Darius Watson (New Britain, Conn.) tallied 13 points, while Spencer Smith (New Haven, Conn.) added seven points and six rebounds.

The Falcons shot just 37.9-percent from the floor and were 3-of-21 from behind the arc, while Anna Maria shot just 36.4-percent, including a 26.7-percent showing in the first half. Albertus also out-rebounded the AMCATS 47-35.

The AMCATS return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Johnson & Wales for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
