Baseball Falls Short In GNAC Playoffs

NEW LONDON, CT - On Friday, May 3rd and Saturday May 4th the Anna Maria College baseball competed in the first round of the GNAC Double Elimination Playoff series hosted by the Mitchell College Mariners. The AMCATS faced the Colby-Sawyer Chargers on Friday resulting in a 10-8 loss followed by a 6-1 loss against the Monks of St. Josephs (ME).

Friday, May 3rd (Colby-Sawyer): The AMCATS took the early lead over the Chargers scoring two runs in the top of the first. The first run for the AMCATS came after Jeremy Rosenberg was grounded out at first allowing Andrew Denison to make his way home. Jarrod Marifiote would be next to bat as he sent Tommy Sasso home off an RBI single making it a 2-0 game. Slowly the Chargers would tie things up over the next two innings before exploding in the third inning for six straight runs to take an 8-2 lead over the AMCATS. Quick to respond in the top of the fourth, the AMCATS put up three runs to close the gap down to 8-5 however the Chargers would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 10-5. The AMCATS would manage two more runs in the sixth inning to close in on the Chargers however it would not be enough as the AMCATS were only able to earn themselves one last run in the top of the ninth inning resulting in a 10-8 loss to open up the playoffs.

Saturday, May 4th (St. Joes (ME)): With a shot at redemption, the AMCATS faced the Monks of St. Joseph's (ME) for game two of the GNAC Playoff Double Elimination series. The Monks would unfortunately be the first on the board after an AMCATS error in the second inning resulted in the first run of the day followed by an RBI single from the Monks to make it a 2-0 game. Both teams would hold each other for the next four innings before the Monks would breakaway in the top of the sixth scoring four straight runs, improving their lead to 6-0. The AMCATS would only manage one run against the Monks after an RBI single from Jarrod Marifiote sent home Kosta Drosidis in the bottom of the eighth. After a scoreless ninth inning, the AMCATS season would come to a close.
