Shell, Choate Headline Ten AMCATS Voted All-GNAC

PAXTON, MA: Senior right-fielder Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) of the Anna Maria College baseball team was voted the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Year while freshman right-handed pitcher Nick Choate (Grafton, MA) was awarded both Pitcher and Rookie of the Year honors as the conference released their 2022 All-GNAC awards in an announcement on Tuesday. Shell and Choate were just two of the ten AMCATS to be recognized with all-conference accolades.

Shell, who was named the 2022 Breakout Athlete of the Year at the Anna Maria College Athletics Department Awards, hit .382 with four home runs and 33 runs batted in for the AMCATS. Shell tied the school's single-season record for triples in a season with five while his 60 hits and 95 total bases this season rank him third all-time. Shell set the Anna Maria's all-time record in career stolen bases at 34 while ranking second all-time in school history in career doubles with 42. His 270 total bases on his career rank him third all-time.

Shell is the second straight AMCAT to be award GNAC Player of the Year honors, joining teammate senior shortstop Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) who was voted the honor last year.

Choate produced one of the most explosive performances ever by an AMCAT pitcher, as he posted a 3.29 earned-runs-against average with 64 strikeouts over 41 innings. As of press time, Choate ranks second in the entire nation in fewest hits allowed per nine innings pitched at 4.17 while his 14.05 strikeouts per nine innings currently rank him third in the nation. He ranked second in the GNAC in ERA and strikeouts. Druing the season, Choate was named NCBWA Rookie of the Week twice while also being named to the d3baseball.com Team of the Week once, the GNAC Rookie of the Week three times and the GNAC Pitcher of the Week twice.

Six AMCATS were voted All-GNAC First Team honors as junior left-fielder / utilityman James Powers (Folsom, CA), junior transfer centerfielder Hunter Dunithan (Reno, NV) and freshman first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg (Boynton Beach, FL) joined Shell, Choate and Drosidis in being recognized as among the best the conference had to offer.

Senior third baseman Nick Genatossio (Sutton, MA) and junior designated hitter Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, CT) were voted second team All-GNAC while senior catcher Noah Holland (Sandwich, MA) and sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) claimed third team honors.

Choate and Rosenberg were joined by freshman left-handed pitcher Michael Shorey (Northbridge, MA) on the GNAC's All-Rookie Team, while Shell, Rosenberg and Dunithan were voted to the All-Defensive Team.

Anna Maria senior right-handed pitcher Joe Gemelli (Grafton, MA) was named to the GNAC Sportsmanship Team.

The 2022 season saw the AMCATS set a new standard for the program for years to come. The team set a modern school records in regular-season wins (23), runs (289) and home runs (31).
