Spataj Plays Big as Baseball Downs the Scots

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: The Anna Maria College baseball team won 13-8 against Gordon College at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior designated hitter Elijah Spataj recorded his first career multi-homer game. Spataj homered to left off Fighting Scots starter Jacob Hitchcock (Goodyear, AZ) in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, it was a grand slam to left off reliever Reid Gohlke (San Diego, CA). The five RBI moved Spataj into the team lead with 29 RBI, while the two home runs moved Spataj into a tie with Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) and Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) for the team lead with four. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Anthony Pingeton (Charlton, MA) threw three innings of one-run relief to earn the win and improved to 3-2 on the year. Pingeton struck out five while only allowing two hits. Pingeton has struck out 26 batters in his last 19 innings across four games.
  • Freshman first baseman Jeremy Rosenberg was a perfect 5-5 at the plate with three RBI and four runs scored. In the second inning, he tied the game at three with a two-run home run to right. He then broke the tie in the fourth inning with a double to the left-centerfield gap that scored junior catcher James Powers (Folsom, CA).
  • Powers scored two runs while going 1-3 three at the plate with a walk.
  • Junior left fielder Seref Mcdowell had two hits in three trips to the plate and drove in two runs and scored another.
  • It was Spataj's second grand slam of the season, having hit a go-ahead shot against Albertus Magnus earlier this month.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back in action on Tuesday when they return to conference play by hosting Lasell University at Marlborough High School for a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
