Coach's Corner-Kevin Bigelow

Coach's Corner-Kevin Bigelow

PAXTON, MA - Women's basketball season is in full effect, and the squad is going strong. In this Coach's Corner spotlight, goamcats.com sat down with head coach Kevin Bigelow for his thoughts on the first month of the season. Bigelow also gave his thoughts on the impact the team trip to Washington DC had and where their mindset is going forward.

How important do you think the trip to Washington DC helped build up team chemistry?

Bigelow: I hope it does prove to be important, and I think so far it seems to have.  Those team dynamic things are something that you look back at later in the season. But as of now, it seems like it has. There is a natural wave to a basketball season, and what I think team chemistry does is help you maneuver those ups and downs to try and stay as level as possible.

A couple of other things we were looking for out of our Washington DC trip was the educational and overall experience. The tours of the Capitol Building and visiting the African American History Museum were great. We also had some players that had never been on a plane, and that for them was an experience in itself.

What are your thoughts on the season so far?

Bigelow: We have had some highs but have also had some occasional struggles.  I think we all feel we have not played our best basketball yet, but when we do, things will click. The great thing about college basketball is the conference is king. The first semester is a time to find yourself as a team and see what works and what does not. But once the second semester comes around, the idea is to be confident in who you are and be ready to compete against the rest of the conference and execute your gameplan.

What are some strengths you have seen?

Bigelow: Our strength from an offensive standpoint is certainly being able to drive the basketball.  We have multiple players who are able to get by their defender to get easy points and draw fouls too. Defensively, we do a pretty good job at defending the three-point line because if you let a team get hot from three, it can really put a game out of reach.

Where do you think the team can improve?

Bigelow: While in three out of our last four games we have outshot teams from three, I think that still is an area we can improve upon.  Because as I said about the importance of making threes, if we can improve that area just a little more, we can pull away from games quicker.

As you head into December, what would you say the team's mindset is?

Bigelow: Our team’s mindset is in a good place I'd say. I think you have freshmen who are trying to do whatever they can, and their mindset is how can I help right now? We also have seniors that are always trying to constantly improve their game while utilizing their current strengths. When we return from break, that is going to be go-time for us and I know everyone is up for the task and looking forward to it.
