Volleyball Falls to WPI 3-0 in Home Opener

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Engineers of WPI in their home opener on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-0, while the loss drops Anna Maria to 1-3.

Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, and 25-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first set was an evenly-matched affair as both teams clocked in with 15 kills apiece. The tides turned from there, as WPI posted a match-high 17 kills in the second set while holding Anna Maria to just nine. The Engineers doubled-up on the AMCATS in the third set, hitting 15 kills to Anna Maria's seven.

The Engineers hit at an impressive 30.3 percent, while Anna Maria finished with a .135 efficiency.

WPI LEADERS

The Engineers were led by Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.) who posted a double-double of 1o kills and 13 digs. Maddy Werth (Bedford, Mass.) also finished with 10 kills.

Setters Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) and Shay Feeley (Franklin, Mass.) split duties and clocked in with 20 and 22 assists, respectively.

In addition to Hunt, the Engineers were also led defensively by Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, Calif.) with 11 digs.

AMCAT LEADERS

Anna Maria saw a match-high 15 kills from junior Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.). Sophomore Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) added eight kills, followed by freshman Alyssa Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) with six.

Sophomore Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) scooped up a match-high 16 digs, while freshman setter Tierney Clancy (Meriden, Conn.) dished out 25 helpers.

THE SERIES

The win marks the 10th in the series for WPI dating back to 2003.

WHAT'S NEXT

The AMCATS return to action on Saturday when they travel to Western New England for a double-feature against the Golden Bears and Emerson. The first match is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
