Women’s Soccer Loses Heart-Breaker to Johnson & Wales

PAXTON, MA : Tied at 0-0 for nearly the entire game, the Anna Maria College women's soccer team lost 1-0 against visiting Johnson & Wales University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Wednesday evening at Carposo Field in Paxton, Massachusetts, losing on a goal with 1:26 to go in regulation.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, October 13, 2021
  • Score: Johnson & Wales 1, Anna Maria 0
  • Records: Wildcats of Johnson & Wales (11-3-2 / 9-0-1 GNAC) | AMCATS of Anna Maria (2-10-2 / 0-7-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half was hotly contested with both teams coming up just short on scoring opportunities against vigorous defenses. The AMCATS held fast against the number one ranked team in the conference, and the game went into halftime still scoreless.
  • The second half saw Johnson & Wales dominate possession, only to be turned away time and time again by a gritty Anna Maria defense. The game appeared headed for overtime, but sophomore Hayley Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, NY) caught a short cross in front of the goal when the keeper moved to break-up the play and chipped in her team-leading 15th goal of the season. The Wildcats exploded in celebration, with junior forward Jordan Restivo (Utica, NY) picking up the assist on the game-winning goal.
  • Anna Maria junior goalkeeper Alice Yokabaskas (Farmingdale, ME) was active in net for the AMCATS, hunting down several balls and finishing with six saves on the night.
  • Johnson & Wales junior goalkeeper Shannon Stockero (McLean, VA) allowed no goals in the first half for the Wildcats. In the second half, senior goalkeeper Liz Kenney (Coventry, RI) entered the game and delivered a shutout.
  • The 1-0 margin was the closest the AMCATS have ever come to beating the Wildcats in the decade since they became conference opponents.

UP NEXT:

Anna Maria will be back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Colby-Sawyer College for a 12:00 p.m. GNAC match.
