Baker’s Brace Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Mass Maritime

PAXTON, MA : Senior midfielder DeAnna Baker (Lansdale, PA) scored two goals for a "brace" as the Anna Maria College women's soccer team won 2-0 against the visiting team from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Monday evening at Carposo Field in Paxton, Massachusetts.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Monday, October 11, 2021
  • Score: Mass. Maritime 0, Anna Maria 2
  • Records: Buccaneers of Mass. Maritime (2-6-2) | AMCATS of Anna Maria (2-9-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams saw scoring chances go askance in the opening minutes off corner kicks. But solid defensive stands deterred either side from finding a clean shot, and both keepers held up their ends as the first half ended scoreless.
  • It would finally be the AMCATS breaking through in the 60th minute when freshman midfielder Olympia Myers (Grimsby, ON) tipped a ball through to Baker who exploded towards the Mass Maritime goal and finished for her third goal of the season as Anna Maria took a 1-0 lead.
  • Then, with 3:50 to go in the game, it would be Baker again, blasting a thirty-yard unassisted cannon kick from the right sideline that went past the outstretched hand of the keeper for her fourth goal of the season, giving the AMCATS a 2-0 lead that held up for the final score.
  • Anna Maria junior goalkeeper Alice Yokabaskas (Farmingdale, ME) posted another strong outing for the AMCATS, with seven saves in net for the shutout victory.
  • Mass Maritime freshman goalkeeper Lindsy Durgin (Rochester, MA) put in a strong showing for the Buccaneers,                turning away four shots.
