Women's Ice Hockey Stymied By New England College, 6-2

HENNIKER, NH - Despite two goals from Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) and Hannah Tobey (Falmouth, MA), it was not enough as the Anna Maria College (2-15-1) women's ice hockey team were topped by the New England College Pilgrims (3-17-1), 6-2 Saturday afternoon at the Lee Clement Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • New England College did not waste any time as the Pilgrims scored just 1:49 into the contest after Meghan Moore (Centerville, MA) found Mikayla Vincent (Newburyport, MA) who originally had a shot turned away by AMCATS goalie, Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC). However, Vincent followed her miss and put the puck past Smith for the quick 1-0 lead.
  • The squad almost responded at 5:13 when Kaitlyn Korpach (North Battleford, SK) had a shot on net but Pilgrims netminder, Hannah Podvey (West Caldwell, NJ) made the save. Anna Maria had one more chance at 9:23 when the 'CATS drew a powerplay opportunity. In that powerplay, Sammons got off one shot but Podvey had the save to preserve the New England College shutout after one.
  • As the second period was underway, the AMCATS evened the contest up (1-1) when Sammons sent a shot past Podvey at 8:10 of the second. Four minutes later (12:01), the Pilgrims had their own powerplay chance and scored the eventual game-winner goal. Julia Radcliffe (Anchorage, AK) had a shot on net but was turned away by Smith and Tara Turcotte (Huntington Beach, CA) found the loose puck for the score to make it 2-1, New England College. The Pilgrims tacked on two more goals in the period off the sticks of Madison Nipper (Casper, WY) and Ally Freeman (Brick, NJ) at 16:06 and 16:42 respectively.
  • Down 4-1 headed into the third, Anna Maria cut the New England College lead in half at 17:41 when Grace Dodge (St. Paul, MN) found Tobey who put the puck in the back of the net. As the period winded down, the Pilgrims added two more goals from Cortney Reyes (Chino Hills, CA) (19:33) and Turcotte (19:59).
