Women's Hockey Edged By Post In Overtime, 3-2

SHELTON, CT - Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) and Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) each had a goal and held a lead for a majority of the third period. However, a late goal by Julia Schatz (East Haven, CT) sent the contest into overtime with a little over a minute remaining (18:59). In overtime, Victoria Paton (Toronto, ON) scored the game-winner as the Post University Eagles (10-16) topped the Anna Maria College AMCATS (2-12-1) Friday afternoon at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a tightly contested first period, no college found the back of the net until about six minutes left in the first (16:37). The AMCATS struck first after Cote created her own offense and found the back of the net when she sent the puck past Eagles goalie, Jenna Baumgartner (Roseau, MN) for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Once the second period got underway, Post evened the game back up with 1:11 left in the second. Natalie Sammons (Collingwood, ON) pushed the puck forward to Molly Brumfield (Colombus, OH) and got the puck through Anna Maria netminder, Julia Smith (Chillwack, BC)
  • Quickly into the third period (7:16), Sammons corralled a pass by Ally Goupil (Victoria, BC) and buried her shot to give the squad a 2-1 lead. As the period wound down, Schatz scored the game-tying goal and the colleges headed into overtime.
  • A little over a minute in overtime (1:04) the 'CATS almost scored the game-winner, but Niamh Cote (Tewksbury, MA) saw her shot turned away by Baumgartner. Just a couple minutes later (3:26), Paton collected a pass from Jenna Abeyta (Aurora, CO) for the Eagles overtime game-winner (3-2).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Cote's goal tied her for the team lead in goals with three.
  • Sammons's goal was the first of her collegiate career.
  • Annabelle Austin (Anchorage, AK) and Ashley Dickinson (Bowmansivile, ON) led the AMCATS in shots (four).
  • Smith got the start in net for Anna Maria and recorded a season/career-high in saves (48).
  • Baumgartner made 13 saves in her start for the hosts.
  • The Eagles outshot the 'CATS by a 74-21 margin.
