Anna Maria Downed By New England College, 4-0

HENNIKER, NH - Despite tallying 39 shots, the Anna Maria College women's hockey team (2-10-1) were shutout by the New England College Pilgrims (NEC) (1-15-0), 4-0 Friday afternoon at Lee Clement Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pilgrims struck shortly before three minutes in (2:55) after Madison Nipper (Casper, WY) generated her own offense when she received a pass from Ally Freeman (Brick, NJ). Nipper collected the pass from Freeman to send her shot past AMCATS goalie, Gabrielle Ohanesian (Bozeman, MT) for the quick 1-0 lead.
  • Anna Maria had a chance to even the score when the squad drew a power play at 4:55. In that opportunity, the 'CATS had two quality chances when Sara Sammons (Western Australia, AUS) and Sophia Zimmerman (Crystal, MN) each had shots on net but were blocked by Pilgrims defenders.
  • Four minutes later (8:21), NEC added another goal when Freeman put her shot past Ohanesian for the 2-0 advantage. Nipper notched her second goal of the contest at 12:51 after Freeman found her for the opportunity and gave the Pilgrims a 3-0 lead.
  • In the second period, the squad outshot NEC, 17-15 that included powerplay a chance with a little over 13 minutes remaining (13:13). Annabelle Austin (Anchorage, AK) sent a shot on net but was turned away by NEC netminder, Cianna Weir (Olds, Alberta)
  • Anna Maria's defense held strong in the period after Gabrielle Gibson (Anchorage, AK) sent away any Pilgrims shots that came her way to keep the AMCATS within striking distance.
  • The squad continued their aggressive offensive approach once the third period started as they generated another powerplay chance just 3:46 into the period. Sammons and Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) each had shots on net, but Weir made two big saves during the powerplay.
  • Cortney Reyes (Chino Hills, CA) added the last goal for NEC before the end period at 17:30 to give the Pilgrims a 4-0 lead.
  • Although the 'CATS totaled 11 shots in the third, they could not find the back of the net after Weir and the Pilgrims maintained the shutout.
