Women's Basketball Wins Fourth Straight

PAXTON, Mass: The Anna Maria Women's Basketball Team won their fourth straight conference matchup this evening with a 74-66 final versus Simmons University.

The Sharks (5-17, 2-7 GNAC) started the game off strong our shooting and scoring the AMCATS (9-14, 6-4 GNAC). Simmons was firing on all cylinders as they were shooting just under 50% from the field and 55% from behind the three-point line. The first quarter ended as a draw 19-19 until Cassandra Stapelfeld went off for 14 points just in the second quarter alone. She ended the half with 22 points and in doing so broke the all-time single season scoring record for her program, and helping the team go into the locker room with a 13-point lead.

Anna Maria came out of the locker room with some excitement and was able to outscore the Sharks in the third 21-to-10 and in the fourth 24-to-14. A huge part of the AMCATS come back was both Sierra Johnson (Brockton, Mass.) and Amber Wilson (New York, NY) who both had a team high 19 points. Wilson was able to finish with a Double-Double with an additional 11 rebounds. Johanna Burke (Oxford, Mass.) was a key contributor on the glass as well, with her finishing with 10 boards.

Simmons was able to keep the contest close throughout with the help of Molly Phillips who went for 15 points. Stapelfeld finished with the game high of 32 points, going 9-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-7 from behind the three-point line.

The AMCATS were able to hold on with clutch free throw shooting at the conclusion of the contest to keep out of reach, as the team went 79% from the charity stripe.
