Softball Falls On Day Three In Florida

NAPLES, FL - The Anna Maria College softball team had another doubleheader today against Wilmington College and Martin Luther College but could not come away with wins in either game by the scores of 13-0 and 16-7 respectively.

Game 1

  • Date: March 9, 2020
  • Score: Wilmington College Quakers 13, Anna Maria College AMCATS 0
  • Records: Wilmington College (2-1), Anna Maria College (1-4)

  • Score: Martin Luther College Knights 16, Anna Maria College AMCATS 7
  • Records: Martin Luther College (4-6), Anna Maria College (1-5)

Game 1 Quakers 13, AMCATS 0

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wilmington started out the game with a two-run home run off the bat of Hayley Suchland (South Vienna, OH) and continued to add to their lead in the second inning after Megan Crager (Westerville, OH) and Suchland had back to back RBI's and pushed the Quakers lead up to 4-0 after two. 
  • However, the AMCATS threatened in the bottom half of the inning after Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) ripped a single to left-center for the squad's first base runner of the morning. Kaitlyn Snyder (Cromwell, CT) continued the momentum that inning when she also hit a single of her own down the right-field line to put runners on first and second with no outs. Unfortunately, the squad could not capitalize on the opportunity as Grace Shell (Sidney, OH) retired the next three Anna Maria batters which included two strikeouts. 
  • It was the third and fourth innings where Wilmington did most of their damage as they posted back to back four-run innings and increased their lead to 12 (12-0). The Quakers saw three different student-athletes chip in RBI's during the third (Jillia Cook (Canton, OH)KenDahl Bowles (Middleton, OH), and Taylor Wells (Montpelier, IN). Then in the fourth, Je'Taysia Johns (Wilmington, OH) launched a three-run home run to right. From there, Shell and the Quakers held on for the 13-0 win after five innings. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Snyder drew the start for the 'CATS and went three innings and then Kendall McNamee (Somers, CT) finished the last two innings.
  • Liston and Snyder were the lone AMCATS hits in the contest. 
  • For Wilmington, Shell pitched a complete five-inning shutout and struck out eight. 

Game 2 Knights 16, AMCATS 7

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Knights scored a run in the first inning, the AMCATS retook the lead in the bottom half courtesy of hits by Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) and Kaitlyn Snyder (Cromwell, CT)Hailey Shaw (Salem, NH) started the rally with a single to short and Kendall McNamee (Somers, CT) notched a single and Shaw reached third. Liston then laid down a sacrifice bunt to drive in Shaw for the first run and then Snyder continued the momentum with a single to left for the 2-1 advantage after one. 
  • The Knights evened the contest in the second inning after Allison Grunke (Fairfax, MN) hit a sacrifice fly to right. However, the squad again responded in the bottom half and reclaimed the lead courtesy of a single by Shaw for the 3-2 lead. 
  • Despite holding a 3-2 advantage, the Knights utilized a six-run fifth inning spearheaded by an Elenna Hoffman (Florence, SD) three-run homer which helped push their lead to 11-3. Anna Maria loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth after singles via Liston, Snyder, and Kassandra Register (Bakersfield, CA).  After the three hits, the squad drove in two runs courtesy of Kyleigh Campbell (Merrimac, MA) and Maria Scandalito (Pomfret, CT) to cut the Knights lead to six (11-5). 
  • In the seventh inning, Martin Luther again had big inning when they scored five runs (16-5) highlighted by a three-run homer from Samantha Schoch (Vanderbilt, MI). Anna Maria again loaded the bases after Shaw had her third single of the afternoon. With two outs, McNamee drove a single to left which scored two runners but unfortunately, Shaw was thrown out at third for a 16-7 loss. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Three different AMCATS student-athletes collected three hits on the afternoon (Campbell, McNamee, and Shaw).
  • Liston drew the start in game two and ended up going 4.2 innings and then McNamee took over for the last 2.1 innings.
  • During the AMCATS rally in the seventh, Riley Cote (Tewksbury, MA) collected her first collegiate hit on a single to right-center. 
  • Despite the loss, the squad outhit the Knights, 18-16. 
  • Morgan Palubicki (Winona, MN) had the start for Martin Luther and went five innings and struck out two. Rebecca Pruss (North Fond Du Lac, WI) finished the remaining two innings. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria resumes Florida play tomorrow in a doubleheader versus Alfred State and Rochester Institute of Technology at 9 AM and 11 AM respectively.
