Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Thriller to Dean

WESTON, Mass. - Junior midfielder Armandio Ferreira (Dorchester, Mass.) found the back of the net just 2:41 into the first overtime period on Saturday afternoon to lift the Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the Anna Maria AMCATS.

After a corner was headed down by senior forward Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.), Ferreira drilled the ball past AMCATS' keeper Mark Robinshaw (Ashford, Conn.) to seal the Pride's second consecutive win. The goal was Ferreira's first of the season.

The Pride jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when junior defender Collin Thurston (Temecula, Calif.) put home his first of the season off a corner. Junior defender Emiky Pires (Boston, Mass.) tallied an assist on the play for his first point with the Pride.

After Regis took a 1-0 lead into the half, sophomore midfielder Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) doubled the Pride lead when he scored in the 60th minute. Ferreira knocked down a long Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) goal kick and perfectly fed a streaking Triana, and the sophomore made no mistake. He unleashed a shot past Robinshaw (eight saves) to expand the lead to 2-0.

Anna Maria, however, refused to go down quietly. A miscue at the back in the 68th minute allowed Amcat senior forward Derrick Casey (Worcester, Mass.) to steal the ball at the top of the box and chip it over Santiago (five saves) to cut the lead in half. With momentum on their side, Anna Maria was awarded a penalty kick just five minutes later, and Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.) made no mistake. Mattioli drilled it into the bottom left corner of the net to equalize and eventually send the game to overtime, where the Pride prevailed.

With the win, Regis moves to 2-0-0 on the young season, the team's first such start since 2011. The AMCATS drop to 0-1-0 with the defeat.

The Pride returns to the field on Monday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Mount Ida College to take on the Mustangs at 1:00 p.m. Anna Maria plays next on Tuesday, Sept. 6 on the road against Dean College.
