Men's Lacrosse Claws Past Castleton, 8-7

PAXTON, MASS: The Anna Maria men's lacrosse team was victorious this evening against nonconference opponent Castleton University on Caparso Field.

 THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/5/2020

Score: Anna Maria 8, Castleton 7

Records: Castleton (0-2), Anna Maria (3-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  Anna Maria struck first six minutes in on a Zion Mercado (Limerick, ME) score to go up 1-0. The First quarter would play out with the AMCATS getting into trouble with penalties allowing the Spartans to score two unanswered goals to go down 2-1. Chris Labonte and Cameron Russell were credited with the Castleton Goals.

-  The second quarter started with another Spartan score from Labonte for his second of the game. Anna Maria did, however, answer back after going down 3-1 to tie it up at threes on two straight goals. Cameron Perry (Coventry, RI) netted the first with teammate Brandon Pavoni (Granby, MA) finishing a man up opportunity to tie it up. But Labonte wasn't done before the half and finished on his third goal of the contest with 9:19 left to take a 4-3 lead into the locker room.

-  After the half, the visiting squad would come out and tack on one more to go up by two on Russell's second of the game to add to the deficit making it 5-3. AMCATS Kory Fortier (Oxford, MA) found the back of the net for the first time with just 8:07 left to go in the third to bring the game within one, but the Spartans would shortly put one more on the board to bring it back to two. Collin Johnson netted the sixth goal for the green and grey to go up 6-4. The third quarter would come to a close with Mercado beating the Castleton keeper for his second goal of the game to decrease the deficit to just one.

- It was just under two minutes into the fourth when Pavoni tied it up at six all on his second score of the day. The AMCATS would extend their lead with four straight goals starting with the last in the third quarter. Perry and Fortier were the last two that scored for Anna Maria to push their lead to 8-6 with both gaining their second goals of the game. The final score of the night came from the Spartans Xavier McKenna but that would be all to get the final of 8-7.
