Field Hockey Loses Heart-Breaker To Lasell

PAXTON, MASS. : The Anna Maria College field hockey team lost 2-1 in overtime against visiting Lasell University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday evening at Caparso Field in Paxton.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2021
  • Score: Lasell 1, Anna Maria 1 (OT)
  • Records: Lasers of Lasell (5-6, 4-1 GNAC) | AMCATS of Anna Maria (3-8, 2-4 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Lasers struck first when – in the 13th minute – Lasell junior forward Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, MA) capitalized on a misplay by the AMCATS to chip the ball in off the keeper, with an assist to sophomore Lily Stark (Saco, ME) as the visitors took a 1-0 lead.
  • Time appeared to be running out for the AMCATS late in the fourth quarter, Anna Maria sophomore defender Nicole LaCoste (Rochdale, MA) took a pass from grad student forward Brittney Cherry (Worcester, MA) and found the back of the net for her second career goal to tie it up at 1-1 and ultimately sending it into overtime.
  • In overtime, the Lasers took control, being awarded five penalty corners. The AMCAT defense held until 2:08 to go in the first overtime period when Blaha got the ball of a corner and scored her second goal of the game as the Lasers celebrated.
  • Anna Maria sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Giordano (Revere, MA) in her first start of the season, tallied four saves in the first half. Junior goalkeeper Hannah Tobey (Falmouth, MA) played the second half, recording seven stops for the rest of the game.
  • Lasell freshman goalkeeper Courtney Tello (Nashua, NH) finished with ten saves in a near shutout.
