Curry Crusades Past Anna Maria, 42-3

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College routed visiting Anna Maria College 42-3 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Walter M. Katz Field.  The Colonels improve to 2-0 on the season while the AMCATS fall to 0-3.

The Colonels scored three times in the first quarter to jump out to an early 21-0 lead. Curry scored on their first drive of the game, an 80-yard 14-play drive that ended with a one-yard touchdown run by Junior quarterback Alex Corvese (Cranston, R.I.).

The Colonels second touchdown of the game came on the defensive side of the football. Junior defensive back Jack O'Rourke (North Falmouth, Mass.) picked off a bad throw by freshman Darius Jones-Clark (Baltimore, Md.), returning it 33 yards for the score. Curry's final score of the quarter came on a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Fervon Phillips (Nantucket, Mass.).

Anna Maria got their only points of the game at the start of the second quarter on a 48-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Francis Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.). Curry answered with another touchdown from Corvese on a seven-yard scramble, extending the Colonels lead to 25.

Curry added one more touchdown before the half on a 12-play, 74-yard drive that was capped on an eight yard catch by senior wide receiver Anthony Nastasi (River Edge, N.J.) from Corvese. Sophomore kicker Marc Mrozek converted all five extra points he attempted in the first half.

The Colonels would score the final touchdown of the game in the third quarter on an 11-play, 6- yard drive. Freshman wide receiver Nicholas Vilanueva caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Corvese to extend the Colonels lead to 42-3.

On offense, Corvese finished the game completing 26-38 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns while also nine times for six yards and two touchdowns. Freshman running back Tyler Furey got the bulk of the work out of the backfield, rushing the ball ten times for 39 yard. Senior wide receiver caught four passes for 98 yards while Nastasi caught nine passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

On defense for the Colonels, sophomore Jeremy Eliades and junior Steven Grogan both finished the game with seven tackles. S. Grogan also added a sack and three tackles for losses.

Anna Maria's Jones-Clark finished the game going 7-17 for 85 yards and two interceptions. Senior running back St. Clair Ryan (South Easton, Mass.) rushed 20 times for 38 yards. Freshman wide receiver Miguel Lloyd (District Heights, Md.) caught two passes for 55 yards.

On the defensive side, senior linebacker Alex Geiger (East Providence, R.I.) had nine tackles (seven solo). Junior linebacker Tyler Jacobs (New Bedford, Mass.) added eight tackles (five solo) and one sack.

Anna Maria returns to action October 1, when they travel to Castleton State to open conference play. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM

Curry returns to the field on Saturday, September 24 when they travel to Western New England College for a conference showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
