Baseball Splits the Day with Johnson & Wales to Open Conference Play

- PROVIDENCE, RI: The Anna Maria baseball team split their conference opening weekend with Johnson & Wales. Game one saw the AMCATS victorious by a score of 6-5, with game two swinging in the Wildcat's favor 13-6.

 THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/27/2021

- Score: Game one ANM 6, JWU 5. Game two JWU 13, ANM 6.

- Records: JWU (2-2, 1-1 GNAC), Anna Maria (8-5, 1-1 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  Game one was lopsided from the bottom of the first inning after the AMCATS put up a five spot. Kosta Drosidis (Holden, MA) got the 'CATS rolling with an RBI single to left field. They tacked on another run on a Fili Veras (Sleepy Hollow, NY) sac fly. The big inning rounded out with catcher Greg Gehring (Southold, NY) hitting a two-run single down the left field line, followed by a Zac Genovezos (Fairhaven, MA) single up the middle to plate the fifth run in the inning to go up 5-0.

-  The AMCATS would score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a James Powers (Folsom, CA) single to center field to score Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, MA) to make the score 6-2.

-  The Wildcats would put up three in the top of the seventh to make it a one-run game, but that would be all for game one.

- Game two saw a 2-2 tie until the top of the fourth when JWU put up four runs to go ahead. The two loan runs through four for Anna Maria came off the bat of Drosidis as a two-run homer. At the time, it gave the AMCATS a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats would tack on another six in the sixth inning to push their lead to 12-2.

- The 'CATS would shrink that lead to half in the bottom of the inning by plating three. Veras walked with the bases loaded to pick up the RBI. The final two runs for the AMCATS in the inning came on a fielder's choice by Jason Shell (Sandwich, MA) and a throwing error to plate the second run.

- The game would end with both teams adding one more each in the seventh to get your final of 13-6.
