AMCATS Bats Go Silent in Loss to Worcester State

PAXTON, MASS: The Anna Maria baseball team fell this afternoon to a nonconference opponent Worcester State at the New England Baseball Complex by a score of 7-1.

 THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/1/2020

Score: Worcester State 7, Anna Maria 1

Records: WSU (1-0), Anna Maria (1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Lancers scored early on in the 1st inning after starting the game with a walk and throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Michael Chaves got credit for the first run batted in on a double to right field.

-  The AMCATS scored their only run in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Nick Genatossio (Sutton, MA) hit his first homerun of the year to deep center field to tie it up 1-1.   

-  The very next inning Worcester State had their biggest run producing inning with a three run inning. Chaves picked up his second RBI of the day when he singled to right field. The second run of the inning came on a double steal. After the throwdown to second wasn't in time Jake Breton stole home to increase the lead to two at 3-1.

- The Lancers would cross the plate one more time in the 3rd to put the score to 4-1 going into the bottom of the inning. Anna Maria wouldn't be able to answer back, and WSU would even tack on three more throughout the rest of the game. They were able to plate one in the 4th, 5th, and 8th to get the final of 7-1.  

TOP PERFORMERS: WORCESTER STATE

Michael Chaves had 3 hits after having 5 at bats. He tallied a game high 3 RBI's along with a double.

- Cooper Bigelow also picked up 3 hits on 4 at bats, along with batting in his first RBI of the year.

TOP PERFORMERS: ANNA MARIA

Nick Genatossio had 2 of the teams 4 hits and the only RBI on his solo homerun.

PITCHING:

Worcester State had a new pitcher each inning, but Sean Mahan got awarded the win after one inning of work, 2 walks and an earned run.

Jack Marzec (Northbridge, MA) was tagged with the loss after going 3 innings with 4 hits allowed and 2 earned runs. He did finish his outing with 5 strikeouts.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  The Lancers out hit the 'CATS 12 to 4.

-  The AMCATS committed 3 errors on the day to WSU's 1.  

-  Anna Maria accumulated more strikeouts from their pitching with 13 to Worcester State's 6.

- Anna Maria returns to action this Saturday when they start their spring training trip in Florida against Gordon at Lake Brantley High School.
