Baseball Swept by Eastern Naz

PAXTON, Mass: The Anna Maria Baseball team dropped both games with Eastern Nazarene College this afternoon in non-conference play at NEBC. Game one was a small margin of 3-2 and game two was 4-2.

Connor Simpson: 1-for-3 with a walk and team high 2 RBI's.

Zachary Carmody: 1-for-3 with a walk and one RBI.

Josue Basilis: 2-for-3 scored one of the three Lions Runs.

 

Top Performers for the AMCATS

 

Jason Shell: 1-for-2 with batting in the only two RBI's in the game on a homerun.

Jake Crevier: 1-for-3 with a double

Adam Twitchell: 1-for-3 scored on Shell homer.

Noah Holland: 1-for-3

Philip Antonucci: 1-for-3

 

Pitching  

 

Brent Houle pitched a complete game for the Lions improving his record to 2-0 on the season. In the 7 innings of work he struck out 8 AMCATS and only let up 5 hits and one walk.

 

Colin Pipkin will be tagged with the loss for Anna Maria as he will drop to 0-2 on the season. Pipkin put in 4 innings of work allowing just 4 hits with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.

 

Liam Cunningham came in to finish off the game as he remains perfect throughout the season with not allowing an earned run. He pitched the last three innings giving up 4 hits and just one walk and one strikeout.

 

How it Happened

 

The AMCATS jumped off to a good start in the second inning when Shell hit his two-run homerun to give the 'CATS a 2-0 lead going into the third.

 

The Lions were ready to respond in the top of the second as they put up one run of their own to cut the deficit to just one. They would go on to tie then take the lead the very next inning on a two-run fourth. The remainder of the contest was scoreless to get the final of 3-2.

 

Game Two Top Performers for ENC

 

Zachary Carmody: 1-for-4 with team high two RBI's on a two-run homerun.

Connor Simpson: 1-for-4 had one RBI on a solo homerun.

Joshua Bombard: 2-for-3 scored one of the Lions runs.

 

Top Performers for the AMCTAS

 

Adam Twitchell: 1-for3 with two RBI's.

Philip Antonucci: 1-for-3, three game hitting streak.

Jackson Dobek: 1-for-3.

 

Pitching

 

Brenndan Rogers also went the distance for Eastern Naz to pick up his second win of the season, improving to 2-1. In his 7 innings of work he had 0 strikeouts, allowing only 3 hits and 2 earned runs.

 

Joe Gemelli suffered his first loss of the season dropping him to 2-1. Gemelli pitched 6 innings allowing 4 earned, with 8 hits, and 2 strikeouts.

 

How it Happened

 

The Lions were the ones to strike first in game two with a leadoff solo shot by Simpson, that was followed up by a hit by pitch. Carmody followed and delivered a two-run shot to go up 3-0 before the AMCATS had a chance to hit.

 

Anna Maria was able to decrease the deficit to just two runs in the bottom of the first when Twitchell grounded out to plate Crevier. Crevier was able to make it to third on a hit by pitch, balk, and ground out by Holland.

 

The AMCATS would tack one more on in the third to end their scoring on the day. Filli Veras walked to start off the bottom of the third and eventually came around to score on a Twitchell single cutting the Lions lead to just one at 3-2.

 

ENC was able to put up one more run to add some insurance in the top of the sixth on a sac fly by Mathew Urena to get the final 4-2.

Anna Maria will be back in action this coming Tuesday as they will face off against Fitchburg State at the New England Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled to be at 3:00 PM.
