2019-2020 AMCAT AWARDS WEEK SPRING SPORTS

In these unprecedented times, where everyone is participating in online learning due to COVID-19, Anna Maria athletics is unable to hold the athletic department awards night scheduled for May 1, 2020. In response, Anna Maria Athletics will be dedicating this week to announcing the department awards for the 2019-2020 season. There are some annual awards that the department chose not to award this year due to the suspension of the spring season in response to COVID-19.

"I am looking forward to our 2019-2020 AMCAT Awards Week and honoring our student-athletes. We have a special group of athletes, and although we can't honor them in person on campus, we are excited to recognize them all week through our web site and social media," commented Joe Brady '96, Director of Athletics.

On Thursday, April 30, the spring team's most valuable player awards, team leadership awards, and four-year commitment awards were announced throughout the day on social media. The spring season was cut short during spring break due to COVID-19. The team's most valuable player is given annually to an individual who has had an outstanding overall performance for their team for the 2020 spring season.. The team leadership award is given annually to an individual who displays exceptional leadership and embodies the values, spirit, and tradition of being a model student-athlete during the season. The individual is an outstanding representative of the school and the department in the classroom, the community, and in their sport, they play. These qualities exhibit what it means to be a student-athlete. The four-year commitment award is awarded to the spring athletes that have participated in their sport for four years. The fourth day of AMCAT Awards week also included an action-packed spring highlight video.

The fall and winter awards were announced earlier in the week. The AMCAT Academic Excellence awards will be announced on Friday, and a 2019-2020 highlight video of all the Anna Maria teams will conclude the week. You can check Awards Week Central for all the Awards announcements and videos.

BASEBALL LEADERSHIP AWARD GOES TO SOPHOMORE

JARROD MARIFIOTE

"Jarrod is our pick for the leadership award because after struggling his freshmen year, he came back focused, worked hard, and waited his turn. He wasn’t in the opening day lineup and didn’t start in any of the first five games. Jarrod didn’t complain, and he didn’t pout. Through it all, he was positive and was a great teammate. He kept waiting for his opportunity and had a couple of helpful pinch hits early on. He then pinch-hit in the Curry game, which was our third game in Florida, and drove in the game-winning RBI off the bench. He then proceeded to go on a tear for the rest of the trip. Jarrod wouldn’t come out of the lineup again for the rest of the week. Jarrod hit .520 and slugged .640 while driving in nine runs and smacking 13 hits, three doubles, in just 25 at-bats. Jarrod’s situation is an inspiration and a lesson to all future players in our program. The key part was even when things weren’t going his way. He was always himself, a great teammate, a great person, and willing to do whatever the team needed to get a win. It’s something we preach often, but not everyone is capable of handling the adversity the way that he did, and the way Jarrod carried himself earned his spot in the lineup, and it should be a lesson and model for all." -Coach Briand

BASEBALL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD GOES TO JUNIOR

JACK MARZEC

"Jack is our team MVP because every time he goes to the mound, he gives our team a chance to win, regardless of who we are playing. When he is on the bump, our whole team lifts their game a little. Everyone shows up and expects to win because everyone knows Jack is one of the best pitchers in Division III baseball. Coming off his GNAC Pitcher of the Year campaign in 2019, he got off to a hot start in 2020 going 3-1 with a school-record 2.25 ERA (MIN 20 INNINGS) and punched out 28 opposing hitters. His two starts in Florida were against both opposing teams #1 pitchers and against teams that play in the CCC and NEWMAC. He threw a complete game in both starts surrendering a total of 5 hits in 14 innings pitched down south, allowing just one earned run and striking out 17 hitters while only allowing four walks on top of out dueling an All-American in the process." - Coach Briand

GINA HOUGHTON

"What is a Leader in the world of athletics? It is a person who has a passion for sports and the ability to motivate and inspire their team, someone who has compassion for their teammates, and a desire to help them be the best they can be. Gina Houghton has demonstrated that she is a strong leader by maintaining her love for the sport, but most importantly, her respect for her teammates." – Lorene Farrar (Equestrian Director)

GRACE BOND

"An MVP is someone who has worked tirelessly to improve their skills. This person was determined to achieve her goals not only for herself but for the team as well. She worked hard to get her diagonals correct, and her dream of going to Regionals became a reality. Unfortunately, the competition was canceled, but that doesn’t take away the hard work and determination that Grace demonstrated this year. Our MVP is Grace Bond." – Lorene Farrar (Equestrian Director)

BRENDAN BARTLETT

"There is always a guy or a couple in every class that wants to help move the program forward. Brendan is a selfless, hardworking, and passionate player. He loves Anna Maria College and wants to win, while also wanting to see the program grow. He has been instrumental in recruiting, and his selfless approach has helped the program land some excellent talent. Having said this, Brendan is also an outstanding player. Having played long-stick midfielder for the previous three years, he moved to close defense this year. He is fast, has excellent footwork, and can be relentless. This season in particular, he was poised to have his best statistical season ever, while leading the program to what would have been its best record ever. Brendan has a way of leading others in a way that is direct while also being personable and supportive. Brendan held himself accountable and was able to keep his peers accountable as well. Brendan is an excellent defender but an even better man. An excellent student, athlete, and leader, we hope to see him back as a graduate student in 2021." -Coach Mayo

MEN'S LACROSSE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER GOES TO SENIOR

BRANDON PAVONI

"Brandon Pavoni is the greatest offensive player in the history of Anna Maria College, PERIOD. The cancellation of the season was heartbreaking for many reasons. One is that Brandon was going to break the 200 point mark this season. Right now, Brandon holds all of the career offensive records for Anna Maria College (129 goals, 59 assists). Brandon was a two time All-GNAC selection, last year making the first team. He played through multiple injuries, probably very seldom playing at 100%. He is a workhorse, a model of an ideal college athlete. A stellar academic career, mixed with the unbelievable work ethic that made him one of the best lacrosse players around. A true leader. Someone who held everyone accountable, himself even more than most. He doesn't know the definition of quit or understand doing something at less than 100%. Now, all we need to do is convince him to come back for 2021, get that 200, and finish something that he and this class put in motion four years ago...a GNAC Championship." -Coach Mayo

SOFTBALL'S LEADERSHIP AWARD GOES TO FRESHMEN

SABRINA LISTON

"This year’s Leadership Award recipient is a first-year player. She exemplifies transformational leadership by inspiring her teammates with her positive energy, passion, and drive. She, like a few other players on this team, had to overcome near-career-ending injuries to work her way back on the field. She is always there when needed to lead parking lot duties for football games or welcoming recruits for overnights. She would often work with less experienced players to mentor and teach them her craft. Her hard work and determination paid off since she played in all ten games, pitched in six of them, for a total of 27 innings. In that time, she earned her first win as an AMCAT, by defeating Elms 21-7. In January, her efforts and leadership skills earned her the title of Captain. Congratulations, Sophomore, #19, Captain, Sabrina “Sab” Liston!" - Coach Sasso

SOFTBALL'S MOST VALUABLE PLAYER GOES TO SOPHOMORE

ASHLEY GARCIA

"This year’s team MVP award goes to the player who is the “heart and soul” of our team! She is continually contributing to the team with her ability to bring everyone together. Her diligent efforts to earn a win, give all she has on and off the field, and exemplifying a genuine concern for all teammates with a contagious and positive spirit! Congratulations, Sophomore, #10, Captain, Ashley “Ash” Garcia. Ashley was incredible at first base this spring. She had 72 putouts, making some tremendous plays, maintaining a perfect fielding percentage, all while playing with an injury to her right hand." - Coach Sasso

BRYCE MCDONALD

"When I was reflecting on this past year, I thought about what I would say about a deserving leader. I noticed a common theme that ran across my mind. I remembered one of Herb Brooks's quotes in Miracle: "When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And that the name on the front is a hell of a lot more important than the one on the back." Although there's nothing more rewarding than wearing a college varsity uniform, focusing on a common goal, and hustling hard with 11 others--the only thing that outshines that feeling is how you physically do it. I'm not quite sure how Bryce pushes herself as much as she does when she steps on that field. Bryce makes sure to hold everyone else accountable and to give their all. Although I've only worked with Bryce for a little under a year now, it's evident that her main concern isn't what are we going to do to succeed as a team, but how are we going to do it. Watching her mold more and more into a leadership role this year, find her voice, find more confidence and structure. Along with a contagious drive to leave it all on the field. Well, needless to say, I'm certainly excited to see what she's going to do as a "soon to be" upperclassman. A voice to reckon with, a hunger for success, and a passion to help, teach, and lead her teammates." – Coach Wilkins

WOMEN'S LACROSSE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD GOES TO SOPHOMORE

ASHLEY RUFO

"There aren't many athletes like Ashley Rufo. I mean, how many student-athletes can say they juggle a major in Health and Community Services along with not one, not two, but three college varsity sports. This award is usually for the most valuable player. However, as a coach who appreciates a warm smile and a good attitude, I'd like to rename this award the Most Valuable Person. I say this because the MVP should not just be the most successful athlete on the team, but should also be someone who puts in the most effort at all times, rain, snow or shine and still asks for more. I find that Rufo is exceptional in every way. She had persevered through one of the toughest seasons in my eyes, where we were just beginning before the rug was ripped right out from underneath us. It certainly makes me question, "what more could Rufo have accomplished?" - Coach Wilkins
