2019-2020 AMCAT awards week FALL SPORTS

In these unprecedented times, where everyone is participating in online learning due to COVID-19, Anna Maria athletics is unable to hold the athletic department awards night scheduled for May 1, 2020. In response, Anna Maria Athletics will be dedicating this week to announcing the department awards for the 2019-2020 season. There are some annual awards that the department chose not to award this year due to the suspension of the spring season in response to COVID-19.

"I am looking forward to our 2019-2020 AMCAT Awards Week and honoring our student-athletes. We have a special group of athletes, and although we can't honor them in person on campus, we are excited to recognize them all week through our web site and social media," commented Joe Brady '96, Director of Athletics.

On Tuesday, April 28, the fall team's most valuable player awards, team leadership awards, and four-year commitment awards were announced throughout the day on social media. The team's most valuable player is given annually to an individual who has had an outstanding overall performance for their team for the 2019 fall season. The team leadership award is given annually to an individual who displays outstanding leadership and embodies the values, spirit, and tradition of being a model student-athlete during the season. The individual is an outstanding representative of the school and the department in the classroom, the community, and in their sport, they play. These qualities exhibit what it means to be a student-athlete. The four-year commitment award is awarded to fall athletes that have participated in their sport for four years. The second day of AMCAT Awards week also included an action-packed fall highlight video.

The winter and spring awards will be released on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, on social media throughout the day, and a final recap will be available on the athletic web site each day at the conclusion of the announcements. The AMCAT Academic Excellence awards will be announced on Friday, and a 2019-2020 highlight video of all the Anna Maria teams will conclude the week.

FIELD HOCKEY LEADERSHIP AWARD GOES TO SENIOR

ANNE MELANSON

"Anne was one of the very first recruits that I communicated with when I started my coaching career at Anna Maria. She is a bright, positive, and a relentless athlete. She has grown throughout her collegiate career and has always been the athlete to ask how she can give more and go the extra mile. Not just with her playing ability, but with her academics, and communication with her peers as well. Not only is Anne a fantastic athlete, CAPTAIN, and friend, but also a ROLE MODEL for our Field Hockey program. Anne captures what it means to be a college athlete. Her drive to succeed not only on the field but also in the classroom makes her a true LEADER. Whether she is orchestrating a Play 4 The Cure fundraiser, meeting one on one with myself or a teammate, or creating programs as a class president, Anne leads with a positive impact. It is challenging to capture everything that Anne has done for our program in a few sentences, but as she moves forward in her career in education, I already know she will achieve more because the team and I have already learned from her positive actions" - Coach Brigham

CHAYNA BINGHAM-HENDRICKS

"When thinking about our Most Valuable Player, two words come to mind --FIERCE COMPETITOR. Someone willing to do whatever it takes to make sure that we succeed as a team. Chayna is that athlete for us. When she is on the turf, she creates a relentless atmosphere and makes her peers work even harder. Chayna plays a tight defensive game, even as a forward, and her work ethic speaks for itself. Chayna received the all-conference, second-team award. In team statistics, Chayna had a career high of eight assists, ranked fourth in goals, first in assists, first in points, and second in shots. For the entire conference, Chayna ranked third in assists and only trailed the conference leader by two. Chayna continues to be the force and intensity that we love to play with and provides the HEART and MENTAL TOUGHNESS to our team, that simultaneously grows on program" - Coach Brigham

RONTE COOPER

"Ronte Cooper was the vocal leader of our team, so naturally, he was elected Captain and made it his mission to hold everyone accountable for their actions this year. He demonstrated a healthy positive attitude that helped younger players understand our standards" - Coach Mulrooney

FOOTBALL MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD GOES TO SOPHOMORE

MARQUIS RODERIQUE

"Marquis was the most dynamic player for us in 2019. He played multiple positions, including wide receiver, running back, and kick returner. He excelled in all three areas and was all-conference in two separate positions, which is unheard of in any sport. Marquis was the sparkplug for our offense, and his production on the field is what set him apart from everyone else this year" - Coach Mulrooney

WOMEN'S SOCCER LEADERSHIP AWARD GOES TO FRESHMEN

MEGHAN MORRONE

“Meghan Morrone arrived on campus this past preseason eager to learn and ready to compete. While her fitness spoke volumes of her commitment to playing at the next level, it only took a few games to realize Meg was willing to put the team on her back as the last line of field defense. She is a center back who adapted quickly to a new style of play, and she leads by example daily. She plays with great physicality and is unafraid, which is evident to anyone watching one of our games. Meg always shows the utmost respect to her teammates, the coaching staff, and the game. She is self-aware, reliable, and her work rate never wavers. These qualities, combined with her accountability and positive communication, make her extremely coachable. I am excited for Meg to receive this year's team Leadership award and for her to continue tapping into her potential as a member of the women's soccer program. Big congratulations, #3!” -Coach Garvey

SHANNON LEBLANC

“Shannon LeBlanc bought into the direction of AMC women’s soccer as a freshman and never looked back. Her commitment to the program and her love of the sport is evident every time she takes the field when Shannon interacts with her teammates, and anytime I have asked for something. Shannon is humble, extremely determined, and a born leader, making it no surprise that she became a Captain her sophomore year. She is also a phenomenal student, and I am confident she will be an excellent nurse post-graduation. Shannon’s technical abilities and soccer IQ have allowed her to excel in various field positions over four years. However, this past season she was a versatile center midfielder. Her vision of the field, execution, and creativity made her a dangerous player for any opponent to mark. In addition to the many goals and assists she has tabbed in her career, her competitive nature consistently helped to elevate the team’s play, and her strength has been an inspiration. A big congratulations to Shannon for receiving this year’s team MVP award. We love you, we will miss you dearly, and we wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors!” - Coach Garvey
