More Than Just an Athlete: Gaby Gibson

More Than Just an Athlete: Gaby Gibson

PAXTON, MA: Anna Maria athletics dives into AMCAT student-athletes to get a more in-depth look at the upperclassmen and how they got to this point in their lives. This feature will be posted on Tuesdays throughout the year.

Next, we look into a junior goaltender from the women's ice hockey team, Gaby Gibson (Anchorage, AK). We got to ask a few questions about why she chose hockey and how her experience has been at Anna Maria so far.

What made you decide to play your sport? What about it inspired you to continue playing?

One thing that gave me the desire to play ice hockey was how competitive and fast-paced it was. As a kid, I always looked up to my older brother. He inspired me to play hockey, and I’ve stuck to it ever since. I continued to play because ever since I first stepped on the ice at age 3, I instantly fell in love with the sport!

Tell us about the journey you took that brought you here to Anna Maria?

I was at a tournament in Buffalo, New York, with my comp team from Anchorage, Alaska. We had a lot of competition, so it was a perfect opportunity to have some scouts watch me play. I was recruited from that tournament.

What is your major, and why did you choose it?

My major is Social Work, and I chose it because I love helping others and making them feel better. My goal is to work in a hospital with children to make their days much brighter. I want to be a difference in the world and create positive energy for those who need it. Eventually, I will work with children and adults, but for now, my main focus will be on children.

What are your plans after graduation? What's the dream job?

After college, I plan to figure out where I want to live and pursue my career in the state I decide to live in. I hope to find a hospital in need of social workers and begin my life uplifting others. My backup plan is to work in a school or office of my own if the hospital plan doesn’t work out. This would be my dream job, but of course, I have a backup plan just in case.

How has your student-athlete experience been so far at Anna Maria?

My student-athlete experience has been great! I’ve exceeded the honor roll throughout my college experience so far and plan to continue with that. I have always been able to balance my sports and school well very well!
