Shay Savoie / Athlete Spotlight

Junior center fielder Shay Savoie of the Anna Maria College softball team has been named the Anna Maria Spotlight Athlete of the Week for the week of May 3, 2021.

“Shay is one of the most athletic, talented, dedicated, student-athletes I have ever had the opportunity to coach.” AMCAT head coach Dr. Lawrence Sasso said of his star center fielder.

Savoie, batting leadoff for much of the season, is hitting .325 at the plate through 22 regular season games while leading the team in hits (25), runs (19), at bats (77), stolen bases (18) and extra-base hits (five).

“I think that the most that any student athlete can be expected to do during these unprecedented times are to stay hungry and to continue to work hard every day in preparation for our next opportunity to play.” Savoie said of her approach this season. “Creating this mindset forces players to want to be better than the day before and to seize every opportunity given.”

A Business Administration major hailing from Namao in Alberta, Canada, Savoie also expects to compete with the volleyball team this fall as a two-sport athlete.

“Attending Anna Maria College was a great opportunity for me to pursue my three major post-secondary interests; Softball, Volleyball and an accelerated MBA program.” Savoie added. “These were all very important factors in my decision to transfer to AMC.”

Through her efforts, Savoie has led the AMCATS to the GNAC playoffs for the first time in school history.

“I am a strong believer in the 80-20 rule in that most of the work put into a season must be done during practice and behind the scenes in what you eat and surround yourself with outside of sports.”
