Rufo's Eight Goal Performance Leads AMCATS Over Dean 16-10 In First Regular Season Win

FRANKLIN, MA - In a back and forth first half, the AMCATS notched their first on the season and head coach Quincy Wilkins collected her first head coaching win in a 16-10 victory at Grant Field Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Dean quickly took a two-goal lead (3-1) after Ann Bosio (Canaan, CT) generated a free position attempt and sent her shot past AMCATS goalie, Emma Walsh (Dracut, MA). However, Anna Maria rattled off six straight goals highlighted by Bryce McDonald (Dracut, MA) and her three goals. Ashley Rufo (Pittsfield, MA) chipped in two goals during the AMCATS offensive explosion for the 7-3 advantage.
  • After Anna Maria built up their lead, the Bulldogs responded with a 3-0 run that saw two goals from Maire Brown (Huntington, NY) which included a late score with 12 seconds left in the first half. Bosio and Lauryn Wilks (Hartford, CT) had the other two goals that wrapped up a 13 goal first half with the AMCATS ahead by one (7-6).
  • Nearly 20 seconds into the second half, Dean evened the contest at seven when Brown collected a pass from Wilks. The tie was shortlived as Alyssa Vacca (Wakefield, MA) collected her initial miss and sent her shot past Bulldogs netminder, Jada Fields (Acushnet, MA). Although the CATS retook the lead, the Bulldogs did not go away as Bosio evened the game up once more at eight (25:08).
  • However, Dean never tied the game again as Rufo scored the eventual game-winner when she ripped a shot past Fields' right side off an Anna Maria clear attempt to give the squad a 9-8 advantage (24:21). Anna Maria never looked back when the AMCATS peppered Fields' with seven goals in the remainder of the game and Rufo was responsible for five of those goals (24:21, 23:24, 17:05, 15:58, 4:34, and 3:48) and two of them came off free positions attempts. Vacca was the other Anna Maria student-athlete who scored in the seven-goal spurt at 15:07 and 8:07 respectively.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Rufo's eight goals are a career-high and surpassed her total goals scored last season (six). Her eight goals are also tied for most goals scored in a game in program history (Katie Schebel; Regis; 3/24/2010).
  • Vacca tallied four goals which tied her total from last season and are a career-high for goals scored in a game. McDonald was the other multi-goal scorer with three and Sierra Green (Lewiston, ME) had an early goal for the AMCATS at 29:37 of the first half.
  • With today's 16-10 triumph, Walsh collected her first collegiate win and made 15 saves on the afternoon. Meanwhile, for the hosts, Fields had eight saves in the loss.
  • Anna Maria had eight free-position shots and converted on five of them whereas Dean had 11 but only made two.
