Anna Maria Falls to St. Joe’s

STANDISH, Maine – Saturday afternoon, the AMCATS traveled to Maine to take on the GNAC leading Monks of St. Joe's. While the first quarter of play was close the Monks controlled most of the contest, winning 81-40.

For the AMCATS, Graduate student guard Johanna Burke (Oxford, Mass) led the team with nine points and four rebounds. Sophomore Hailey Moore (Worcester, Mass) scored eight points of her own while also pulling down four boards. Though the offense struggled, freshman guard Franny Hammond (Worcester, Mass) racked up six assists on the afternoon and was also tied for the team lead in rebounds with four.

For the Monks, there were four players in double digits. Leading all scorers in the game was junior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) with 18 points. Junior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) recorded a double-double in the game with 16 points and 10 boards. The other two players in double digits for the Monks were junior forward Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) with 12 points and junior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass) with 11 points.

Leading 17-15 with 3:14 remaining in the first quarter, Saint Joseph's rattled off 19 unanswered points over the following nine minutes of play. The one-sided scoring effort was part of a 34-6 run spanning 15 minutes, Emily Benway knocked in a layup to lift the hosts to a 51-21 lead with 8:01 remaining in the third frame.

The Monks held the AMCATS to 10 total points in the second and fourth quarters combined, with six in the second and four in the final period.
