Women's Basketball Suffers 75-45 Loss at Emmanuel

BOSTON, Mass. – Anna Maria College women's basketball suffered a 75-45 loss to the Saints of Emmanuel College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Andy Yosinoff Court. The Saints improve to 9-5 on the year and 5-1 in GNAC play while the loss drops the AMCATS to 2-11 and 0-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBER

Senior guard Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor including 2-for-2 from distance. Senior guard Nicole Mareiro (Acushnet, Mass.) added nine points, three rebounds and three steals.

For Emmanuel, senior forward Jen Chalk collected a team-high 14 points while junior guard Alisha Fox added 10 points and four steals. Making her second straight start, sophomore Christine Miller grabbed a game-high seven rebounds while sophomore Olivia Dalphonse dished out a game-high six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Anna Maria jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind a jumper from Gauvin but the Saints took the lead for good on a three by Dalphonse on the following possession. The action remained a one possession game for most of the first quarter before EC sophomore center Mary McCarthy hit a layup with 1:57 to play in the quarter to give Emmanuel a 9-4 lead. The hosts ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to build a 14-6 lead heading into the second stanza.

In the second quarter, Emmanuel outscored the AMCATS 23-14 powered by an intense full court defensive press that forced the visitors into making 16 first half turnovers. EC made them pay scoring 20 first half points off of turnovers to build a 37-20 lead heading into halftime.

The Saints put the game out of reach in the third, outscoring Anna Maria by an 18 point margin in the frame (28-10) to amass a 65-30 lead going into the final quarter. In the fourth, Anna Maria was able to outscore the hosts 15-10 but the Saints cruised to the 75-45 win for their third GNAC victory of the week.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 16 when the Saints head to Nashua, N.H. against Rivier University while Anna Maria hosts Saint Joseph's College (ME). Both GNAC contests are scheduled for 1:00 PM tips.
