Softball Soars Past Elms College, 21-7; Edged In Second Game Against SUNY Delhi, 4-2

Ft. Myers, FL - In Day two of the Gene Cusic Softball Classic, Anna Maria College took their first game by a 21-7 margin and were edged in a competitive 4-2 battle against SUNY Delhi at the CenturyLink Sports Complex.

Game 1: AMCATS 21, Blazers 7

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The AMCATS wasted no time as they scored two runs in the first inning behind a double to center field from Michelle Cilley (Dracut, MA) and a Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) had a grounder go to second that drove in one. Anna Maria continued their strong offensive play as they posted two more runs in the second, and four in the third which pushed their lead to 8-0. 
• However, it was the fourth inning where the squad did their damage as they posted nine runs in the inning for a 17-0 advantage. Kendall McNamee (Somers, CT) got the inning going when she ripped a single up the middle and after, Kassandra Register (Bakersfield, CA) reached on a successful bunt, Kyleigh Campbell (Merrimac, MA) drove in McNamee from a single through the left side. 
• Anna Maria added four more runs in the fifth which gave them a 21-1 advantage, but Elms did not go quietly as the Blazers put up a seven-run inning highlighted by a Sofie Oliveria (Windsor Locks, CT) double to deep right. Despite Oliveria's double, it was not enough as the AMCATS secured a 21-7 victory. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Sabrina Liston (Rehoboth, MA) drew the start and pitched a complete five innings while striking out four Blazers. 
• Campbell had a perfect 4-4 day that included two RBI's. Her four hits also marked a career-high. 
• Anna Maria's 21 runs and 14 run margin of victory marked program-bests. 
• The squad recorded a season-high 16 hits on the afternoon. 
• For the Blazers, Ryanne Fournier (Longmeadow, MA) led the team with two RBI's. 
• The AMCATS drew a season-high 12 walks. 

Game 2: Broncos 4, AMCATS 2

HOW IT HAPPENED

• After Hailey Shaw (Salem, NH) and Michelle Cilley (Dracut, MA) reached from a hit pitch and walk, Kendall McNamee (Somers, CT) drove home Shaw off a double down the left line for the 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Kyleigh Campbell (Merrimac, MA) sent a single off the Broncos pitcher and Cilley came home and the squad was up 2-0 after one. 
• However, the AMCATS bats were quieted down the rest of the contest from Broncos pitcher, Molly Greene (Glenford, NY) who went seven innings and struck out two. Later in the fourth inning, SUNY Delhi evened the contest at two after Kayla Beers (East Meridith, NY) sent a single up the middle which drove in both runs that inning. 
• Neither college could break the tie for the next two innings until Samantha Mendelsohn (Brooklyn, NY) sent a double to deep left field and brought in two more runs fo the 4-2 Broncos lead. At the bottom of the seventh, the 'CATS threatened when Maria Scandalito (Pomfret, CT) ripped a shot to left field that was misplayed by the fielder and advanced to third with no outs. 
• Unfortunately, the squad could not muster any more runs as Greene got out the next three AMCATS batters and earned the 4-2 win. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Kaitlyn Snyder (Cromwell, CT) got the start and did her best to keep the squad in the game throughout as she went seven innings and struck out four. 
• McNamee and Campbell continued their strong play for the 'CATS in game two as they each had RBI's. 
• SUNY Delhi slightly outhit Anna Maria in the afternoon by a nine to six margin. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria has another doubleheader tomorrow as the squad takes on Wilmington College (OH) and Martin Luther College at 9 AM and 11 AM respectively. SUNY Delhi has some time off before they host Houghton College on Saturday, March 21 at 2 and 4 PM.
