Falcons Sweep ‘Cats in Weekday Conference Doubleheader

NEW HAVEN, Conn – Thursday afternoon, the AMCATS traveled to Southern Connecticut to face off against Albertus Magnus, looking for their first win of the season. At the end of the afternoon, the AMCATS were still without a win losing to the Falcons 8-0 in five innings in game one, and 10-2 in six innings in game two.

Game 1

In game one, the AMCATS were one hit by the Falcons pitching. Jacqueline Lapierre recorded the only hit, a double, in her one-for-two performance at the plate.  Victoria Falco walked in the game, the only one surrendered by Albertus. Falco also started in the circle for the AMCATS pitching 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, all eight runs, only three of which were earned. The only other players to reach base in the game for the AMCATS were Hannah Trudo and Annie Melanson.

The Falcons produced six hits in the game off of Falco, all coming from different players. Laura Anderson had a one-for-two game, driving in two runs, scoring one of her own, with her only hit coming in the form of a double. Kristen Cunning had the only other extra base hit in the game for Albertus, a triple. She also drove in two runs, walked, and scored a run of her own. Falcon shortstop Brianna Whitfield scored two runs for the hosts. Anderson was also the starting pitcher for the Falcons, pitching 5.0 innings, surrendering the one hit, walking one and striking out five AMCAT hitters.

The Falcons scored in every inning but the second, getting on the board in the bottoms of the first on a sac fly by Anderson, helping herself out earl, scoring Whitfield.

In the third, Albertus scored another run when Gillian Fortier scored on an error by the left fielder. They would add another run in the fourth on an Anderson double, scoring Whitfield once again.

The fifth inning was the biggest for the Falcons, scoring five runs to make it 8-0, sealing game one in favor of the home team.

Game 2

The AMCATS doubled their hit production in game two with hits from Victoria Falco and Jacqueline Lapierre. Senior captain Kathryn Rendock drove in the only two runs in the game for Anna Maria, one scored by Lapierre, the other by Allison Sholds. Falco also started game two on the mound, this time going 5.1 innings. She allowed 14 hits and all 10 Albertus runs.

Albertus Magnus strung together 14 hits in the second game of the day and scored ten runs. Leadoff hitter Aliza Esposito had a perfect three-for-three day at the plate, which included a triple, and she drove in two runs and scored twice. Starting pitcher Kristen Cunning also had a three-hit game, going three-for-four, driving in two runs. Brianna Whitfield and Melissa Castillo had multi-hit games for the home team, with Whitfield accumulating two RBI and scoring twice. On the mound, Cunning pitched all six innings, allowing the two hits and two runs, neither of which were earned. She walked two and struck out six AMCATS.

The Falcons struck in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on a Whitfield trip that scored Esposito and then an Anderson ground out that plated Whitfield.

In the top of the second, the AMCATS made a game of it, scoring two runs when Rendock reached on an error, scoring Sholds and Lapierre in the process. The tie game wouldn't last long with the Falcons scoring twice in the bottom of the inning, jumping out to a 4-2 lead. A lead that would never be surmounted by the 'Cats again and would extend out to 10-2 by the sixth inning.

The Falcons scored another in the third, one in the fifth, and the four in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule with two outs in the inning, 10-2, giving the Falcons the conference sweep.

The AMCATS are back on the diamond on Saturday beginning at noon for a GNAC double header against Mount Ida College.
