Anna Maria no Match for Blazers

NAPLES, Florida – Tuesday morning the AMCATS played against Western Mass foe, Elms College in the first of three games the teams will play this season. In the first matchup, the Blazers were no match for the AMCATS as they took the game 16-1 in five innings.

Anna Maria accumulated six hits in the game, all coming from different players in the lineup. Junior Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn) was one-for-one in the game with two walks. Senior Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn) came off the bench in the game and got the only extra base hit for the 'Cats in the game and drove in the only run. That only run was scored by sophomore Annie Melanson (Grafton, Mass).

For Elms, Elizabeth Olszewski went three-for-five on the day with a home run. She drove in five of the 16 runs. Madison Messer added three hits, one being a triple, and drove in four runs while scoring three times.

The Blazers scored first in the top of the first when Messer drove in the first run of the game. Elms would score three in the innings. In the second, the Blazers piled on five runs to go up 8-0 after two.

The AMCATS had no answer for their opponent and didn't score their lone run until the bottom of the fourth. But, by then, the Blazers had scored seven more runs. In the fourth, Rendock doubled to score Melanson but it wasn't enough. Elms would add a final run in the top of the fifth and though the 'Cats would get a hit in the bottom of the frame, the next three hitters would be retired and Elms took the win by run rule, 15-1.

The AMCATS are scheduled to host Elms in a double header to open their home schedule on March 14th after the two teams return home from Florida.
