AMCATS Split GNAC Doubleheader with Cadets

Worcester, Mass.—The Anna Maria College softball team split in a two game series with the Cadets of Norwich University on Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. The Cadets took a 6-0 victory in game one before the AMCATS took game two with a final score of 8-7. This series brings the AMCATS to 4-18 overall and 2-10 in the conference while the Cadets move to 6-15-1 on the season and 6-6 in the GNAC.

GAME ONE

The AMCATS and Cadets both came out ready to play in the first game. Both teams were led by strong pitching outings. The Cadets were led by Rachel Johnson who pitched a complete game striking out nine batters and earning the win for the Cadets. Senior Alexi Romano (Lowell, Mass.) pitched a scoreless five innings but the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game. The Cadets scored five of their six runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Cadets loaded up the bases to set up the big inning. The scoring started with Sarah Peyton walking with the bases loaded to bring in one run. The Cadets did not look back and ended up scoring four more runs that inning. The offensive power proved to be too much for the AMCATS to answer. 

GAME TWO

The Cadets started off the game hot in the first inning scoring two runs on a pair of RBIs by Naomi Rinaldo and Mckenna Wade. The AMCATS clawed their way back into the game in the second inning with two runs on RBIs by junior Hannah Trudo (Pomfret Center, Conn.) and sophomore Kayla Magierowski (Spencer, Mass.). The AMCATS took the lead in the fifth inning with a two RBI single by sophomore Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.). The Cadets answered back right away in the top of the sixth with four runs of their own, started by Justina George's RBI on a fielder's choice. The decisive inning in the game was the bottom of the 7th with the AMCATS clawing their way back to win on a walk off. Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) had a two RBI single to bring the score to 7-6. The AMCATS tied up the game with an RBI by Hannah Trudo to tie the game up 7-7. The AMCATS would win on a passed ball as Moran stole home for the ultimate 8-7 victory.

Moran earned the win on the mound for the AMCATS as she pitched a full seven innings scattering 12 hits and seven runs (five earned). She is now 2-2 this season.

The AMCATS host Emmanuel College in GNAC action on Wednesday, April 19 for a GNAC doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. The Cadets travel to Suffolk on Thursday, April 20 for a pair of conference contests starting at 3:30 p.m.
