Softball Falls in GNAC Doubleheader With Falcons

New Haven, Conn. – The Anna Maria College softball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday evening.The Falcons rolled to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory in game one and a 7-0 win in the second game. The win lifts Albertus Magnus to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC while Anna Maria falls to 2-12 on the season and 0-4 in conference play.

GAME ONE

In the top of the second inning freshman Morgan Shura put the Falcons on the board first as she allowed Daysia Wehder to score and moved Marissa Guglielmi to third. However, the Falcons ended the inning leaving three runners on base following a groundout to short stop.

In the top of the third inning Albertus Magnus extended its lead to six, 6-0, after the Falcons scored five runs on four hits and an AMCATS' error.

The Falcons continued scoring in the top of the fourth as Gillian Fortier led off with her first home run of the season before Melissa Castillo recorded a RBI sacrifice fly that would bring home Aliza Esposito making the score in favor of the Falcons, 8-0. With two outs, runners on first and third, as well as a new pitcher on the mound, Wehder was able to score off of a passed ball before the final out was recorded.

Up by nine, 9-0, the Falcons final run of the game came in the top of the fifth as Rachel Cataudella scored off an RBI single from Megan Kelly.

The AMCATS finished game 3-of-17 at the plate while the Falcons went 12-of-26. Amanda Lemire (Methuen, Mass.), Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.) and Mackenzie Shurtleff (Wareham, Mass.) all recorded a hit for the AMCATS.

GAME TWO

After a scoreless first inning, Albertus Magnus struck first scoring six runs in the top of the second to take the early advantage. Daysia Wehder started the inning with a walk before Marissa Guglielmi singled to right field to put two runners on with no outs. Wehder scored the Falcons' first run of the game after advancing home on an error by the third baseman. Despite picking up two quick outs, Albertus Magnus continued to swing the bat as the next three batters singled allowing four runners to score. Melissa Castillo allowed the final two runs of the inning to score after a double to right field.

Falcons struck again in the top of the fifth as the visitors scored a run on three hits to secure the 7-0 win. Wehder recorded the RBI as she allowed Castillo to score off of her sac fly to left field.

Kayla Magierowski (Spencer, Mass.) led the AMCATS with two hits while Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn.) and Jacqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) added a hit apiece
