Hawks Fly to Two Game Sweep with AMCATS

Worcester, Mass.—The Anna Maria College softball team dropped a pair of games with the Hawks of Becker College on Thursday evening. The Hawks took a 9-5 victory in game one before moving on to claim the 13-4 final victory in game two.

The loss drops the AMCATS to 2-10 overall this season while the Hawks improve to 4-8 on the season.

GAME ONE

Junior Jaqueline Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) opened up scoring in game one with a homerun in the bottom of the first inning to put the AMCATS up 1-0. Becker answered back with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning starting with a double from Megan Klemanchuck and a double from Vasia Murphy to take the 3-1 lead.

Anna Maria was able to tie the game up at three a piece with two runs scored in the bottom of the fourth inning. Victoria Falco (Marlborough, Mass.) started it off with a double to center field and Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.) knocked down a single that resulted in a Hawks fielding error to score Falco. Freshman, Mackenzie Shurtleff (Wareham, Mass.) recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Carreira and tied the game up 3-3. '

Becker gained a three-run lead in the top of the fifth with three hits and three runs in the inning (6-3). Anna Maria crept back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring them within just one run, 6-5.

This would end scoring for the AMCATS and the Hawks were able to notch three more runs to solidify the 9-5 victory in the top of the seventh inning.

Shurtleff led the AMCATS with a hit and two RBIs on the day. Falco and Lapierre each recorded two hits and one RBI in the loss.

Lauren Niemann and Klemanchuck each recorded two hits and two RBIs in the victory while Katelyn Maclean recorded a hit and two RBIs.

Alexis Romano (Lowell, Mass.) pitched a full seven innings for the AMCATS scattering 13 hits and nine runs (five earned). Samantha Lee also pitched a full game for the Hawks giving up seven hits and five runs (four earned) and struck out nine batters.

GAME TWO

The Hawks took a 13-4 victory in a six inning game two with the AMCATS. They opened up scoring in the first inning with three runs led by a two run homerun by Murphy. Anna Maria responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first as Amanda Lemire (Methuen, Mass.) crossed home plate on a double from Carreira (3-1). Becker added two more runs in the top of the second but the AMCATS fought back with three runs in the bottom of the inning led by a two run homerun from junior, Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn.) to bring Anna Maria within one run, 5-4.

The Hawks ran ahead to an 8-4 lead with three more runs in the top of the third due to an AMCAT fielding error. The next two innings remained scoreless and then in the top of the sixth inning Becker gained five runs led by doubles from Klemanchuck and Ashley Ciepiela. The Hawks took the ultimate 13-4 victory.

Rendock recorded one hit, one run, and two RBIs in game two while Lemire posted a team high three hits to go along with one hit and one RBI. Carreira and Trudo both went two-for-three at the plate.

Klemanchuck went three-for-four with two RBIs to lead the Hawks to victory while Murphy went two-for-three with two RBIs.

Romano pitched five innings in game two scattering 12 hits, 13 runs (10 earned) and four strikeouts. Rendock pitched in relief for Romano and struck out one batter. Samantha Lee earned the victory for Becker pitching 3.2 innings and giving up just three hits, no runs, and recording two strikeouts.

The AMCATS host Albertus Magnus for their first conference game of the season on Sunday, April 2 in a doubleheader at the New England Baseball Complex starting at 6:30 PM. The Hawks host Wheelock on the same say with two games starting at 12:00 PM.
