Suffolk Takes Two from Softball on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Anna Maria College softball team dropped both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader to the Rams of Suffolk University on Thursday afternoon at Clark University's O'Brien Field by scores of 7-2 and 6-2, respectively.

The Rams improve to 27-7 overall and 16-4 in league play, while the AMCATS fall to 4-29 overall and 2-18 in GNAC action.

In between games, the AMCATS recognized three seniors playing in their final home game: second baseman Elizabeth Haggerty (Charlton, Mass.), pitcher Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) and outfielder Brittany Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.).

GAME ONE – SUFFOLK 7, ANNA MARIA 2

Suffolk pitcher Ali Yamakaitis (Avenel, N.J.) held Anna Maria to just one hit through five innings en route to her 10th win in the circle this season.

Meanwhile, Suffolk took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and added four more runs in the third for an early 6-0 lead. Anna Maria would hold the Rams scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings but allowed them a seventh run in the top of the sixth.

Anna Maria scored both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh as Sabrina Carreira (West Hartford, Conn.) led off with a single. Kayla Magierowski (Spencer, Mass.) hit her ball to the first baseman, but her attempt to throw out the lead runner at second sailed into the outfield, allowing Carreira to advance to third.

With runners on first and second, Suffolk tried to pick-off Carreira at third, but the throw from the catcher also went into left field, allowing Carreira to score and Magierowski to move up to third. After back-to-back strikeouts, Haggerty drilled a two-out double to right field to drive in the second run.

The Rams tallied 10 hits as a team, led by Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.), Lindsay Pagano (Wyckoff, N.J.), and Madison Eucalitto (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who all finished with two hits apiece.

AMCAT pitcher Ally Hamelin (Greenfield, Mass.) took the loss for Anna Maria, throwing a complete-game with four walks and two strikeouts.

Yamakaitis finished with seven strikeouts in the win.

GAME TWO – SUFFOLK 6, ANNA MARIA 2

AMCAT senior pitcher Angela Vousboukis (Swampscott, Mass.) held the Rams to just one run through the first five innings in the nightcap in the complete-game effort.

The Rams would plate three in the top of the sixth on an RBI sacrifice-fly by Evelyn Marquis (Oxford, Mass.) and a triple by Meredith Ball (Nahant, Mass.) that scored two.

Anna Maria fired back in the bottom of the same inning with two runs on a single to right field by Magierowski That forced Suffolk to switch pitchers, and reliever Kim Crucioli (North Andover, Mass.) settled in for the last out as Anna Maria stranded two baserunners.

Marquis would drive in two more for Suffolk on a single up the middle in the top of the seventh, and Crucioli would retire the side in the bottom of the inning to complete the Rams' sixth conference sweep of the season.

Suffolk compiled 15 hits as a team, led by Delaney Sylvester (Worcester, Mass.),Eucalitto, and Dylan Parsons (Methuen, Mass.), who all batted 3-for-4. Morgan Parameter (Maynard, Mass.) added two hits.

Anna Maria recorded eight hits, led by Haggerty with two.
