Men's Soccer Falls to JWU 2-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team dropped to JWU 2-0 on Friday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at AMCAT field.

With the loss, the AMCATS drop to 2-12-1 overall and 1-7-1 in GNAC play, while the Wildcats improve to 10-3-4 overall and 6-2-1 in league action.

SCORING

Freshman, Jason Cruz opened up the scoring for Johnson & Wales in the fifth minute of play as he received a pass from Andrew Vecere, wound up from 20 yards out and put the shot past the left hand side of AMCAT goalkeeper, Jonathan Alicea (Feeding Hills, Mass.).

With 43 seconds on the clock the Wildcats capitalized on another opportunity as freshman Riley Spotton received a small pass from Xavier Carty at the five yard line and shot the ball to the left corner of the net. This was Spotton's first goal of the season. The Wildcats outshot the AMCATS 11-5 in the first half (5-2 on goal) and took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

Despite 20 shots taken by the Wildcats in the second half (12 on goal) there was no scoring in the second half. The Wildcats took the 2-0 win as they only allowed the AMCATS two shots in the second half.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks held a 31-7 advantage in shots and held and 17-2 advantage in shots-on-goal over the 90-minute contest.

GOALKEEPERS

AMCAT keeper Jonathan Alicea recorded 15 saves in net and drops to 0-4 this season. Senior, Jon Rubbins earned the win for the Wildcats with a two-save performance. He improves to 7-2 overall this season.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria returns to AMCAT Field on Wednesday for their final game of the season, a 5:00 p.m. contest against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The team will host a senior day ceremony prior to kick off. Johnson & Wales travels to Rhode Island College on Tuesday for a non-conference match starting at 4:00 p.m.
