Falcon's Fly to 3-1 Victory over Men's Soccer

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team scored the first goal of the game, but the Albertus Magnus College Falcons answered with three-straight scores en route to the 3-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in GNAC play, while Anna Maria falls to 2-11-1 overall and 1-6-1 in league action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons held a 22-10 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks in the victory. Despite giving up the first goal of the game, they rallied for three-unanswered goals in the first half. The second half was scoreless on both sides.

SCORING

Anna Maria's Derrick Casey (Worcester, Mass.) used his head to redirect a free-kick from Dan McElhinney (Natick, Mass.) in the 15^th minute to put the AMCATS on the board.

They managed to maintain the lead for over 20 minutes, but the Falcons answered in strong fashion, scoring the equalizer and the game-winner just 30 seconds apart.

At the 35:39 mark, Alex Zapata (Hampden, Conn.) scored the equalizer on his fifth goal of the season. At the 36:09 mark, Ritchy Jean Pierre (Fairfield, Mass.) carried the ball solo for nearly half the field for a one-on-one with AMCAT netminder Jonathan Alicea (Feeding Hills, Mass.). He drew Alicea out and shot past him for the 2-1 lead.

Albertus netted their final goal in the 44^th minute when Matt Mueller (Cheshire, Conn.) scored in similar fashion after intercepting a pass between AMCAT defenders 35-yards out for another one-on-one with Alicea.

GOALKEEPERS

Alicea made 10 saves in the net for Anna Maria, while Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) made five saves in the win.

Anna Maria continues their three-game home stand on Friday when they host Johnson & Wales in their final GNAC game of the season on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Senior day will take place on Wednesday, October 26^th at 5:00 p.m. against WPI.
