Men's Soccer Topped by Saint Joseph's, 4-0

PAXTON, Mass.—The Saint Joseph's College men's soccer team remained flawless in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 4-0 shutout over the AMCATS of Anna Maria College on Monday afternoon.

With the win, the Monks improve to 11-1-3 overall and 6-0-0 in GNAC play, while Anna Maria falls to 2-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks scored their first goal of the game in the 15th minute and had plenty of opportunities to add to it in the first half, but many of their set-plays were intercepted by AMCAT defenders in the first half. Saint Joseph's still managed to outshoot the AMCATS 13-4, but the score remained 1-0 entering halftime.

The story changed in the second half as the Monks netted three goals in quick succession at the 53rd, 57th, and 64th minutes. The Saint Joseph's defense was flawless in the second half as they did not allow a single AMCAT shot.

SCORING

Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in the 15th minute as he stuffed home a cross across the goal line from teammate Nicholas Borowski (Webster, Mass.).

In the second half, Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) gave a beautiful through-ball to Kartikeya Swarup (Delhi, India). Swarup drew out AMCAT goalkeeper Jonathan Alicea (Feeding Hills, Mass.) with a fake shot, dribbled past him, and beat an AMCAT defender to an unattended net for the tap-in goal.

Dalton Guamer (Corona, Calif.) netted a penalty kick in the 57th minute for the 3-0 lead before Swarup fed a cross from the right wing to the top of the 18-yard box, where Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was waiting to place a high shot into the net.

GOALKEEPERS

Alicea made 10 saves in net for Anna Maria in his second start of the season. Monks keeper Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) needed to make just one save in the complete-game shutout.

WHAT'S NEXT

Anna Maria is idle until Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for a 1:00 p.m. The Monks are also in action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Norwich.
