Men's Soccer Suffers Setback against Springfield

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Pride of Springfield College on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

With the win, Springfield remains flawless at 5-0, while the loss drops Anna Maria to 1-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Springfield scored once in the first half despite a 12-3 advantage in shots. AMCAT netminder Mark Robinshaw (Ashford, Conn.) turned aside eight shots in the first half to keep Anna Maria within striking distance.  

The Pride added strong offensive pressure in the second half and scored three more goals in a 10-minute span while tallying an incredible 25 shots in the second half alone.

Springfield would add additional goals in the 70^th, 74^th, and 86^th minutes to take a 7-0 victory.

SCORING

The Pride scored their first goal in the 17^th minute as Christian Steidle (Oswego, N.Y.) was left undefended 30 yards out and sent it the ball into the box, where Douglas Enga (Syosset, N.Y.) was waiting to head-it in for his first score of the season.

Springfield wasted little time adding to their lead in the second half, as they needed just five minutes to tally their second goal, a breakaway by Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.).

Just over two-and-a-half minutes later, the visitors made it 3-0 on a goal by Nick Fontana (Marshfield, Mass.), assisted by Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.).

In the 60^th minute, Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) netted his seventh goal of the season after collecting a long pass from midfield from Keon Haji (Shrewsbury, Mass.), dribbling it into the box, and shooting to the opposite corner.

Fontana, the only member of the Springfield roster to score twice, netted the team's fifth goal in the 70^th minute. Teammates Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) and Charlie Argyle (Marshfield, Mass.) scored in the 74^th and 86^th minutes, respectively.

GOALKEEPERS

Anna Maria's Robinshaw tallied 13 saves in net before suffering an injury and sitting out the final 16 minutes. He was relieved by defenseman Dalton Gill (Florida, N.Y.), who tallied two saves.

Springfield's Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) recorded three saves in the first half. Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) played the entire second half and did not see a shot on net.

Anna Maria travels to Mount Ida for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Springfield will host Wheaton College on Saturday at noon in a NEWMAC tilt.
