Men's Soccer Stuns Albertus Magnus in 2-0 Shutout

PAXTON, Mass.—The Anna Maria College men's soccer team stunned the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College on Friday evening, tallying a 2-0 shutout win in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action for the team's third win of 2014.

The win bumps the AMCATS to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Falcons to 10-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 against league opponents. Today's win marks the third GNAC win for the AMCATS since joining the league in 2011.

Freshman Derrick Casey (Worcester, Mass.) set the tone of the when he tallied the game-winning goal just eight minutes into the game. Sophomore Gregory Cory (Beacon, N.Y.) fed a long free-kick in front of the net, where Casey was waiting to head the ball past Albertus Magnus goalkeeper Griffin Volta (Orange, Conn.).

The AMCATS carried the 1-0 lead into the second half, where senior Jamison Crowley (Southington, Conn.) netted his first goal of the season in the 59^th minute. The scoring play was textbook, as Christopher Mattioli (Sturbridge, Mass.) carried the ball to draw the defender towards him before passing to Crowley, who buried the shot low and to the far left post.

The Falcons dominated the shots column, 22-15, and had their best opportunity to score with 10:42 remaining in the second half when Matt Mueller (Cheshire, Conn.) found himself with a wide-open look at the net from 20-yards out. Anna Maria goalkeeper Elliot Kuzma (East Haven, Conn.) handled the shot with a perfectly-timed jump to get one hand on the ball, sending it soaring over the crossbar.

Kuzma totaled 10 saves in the win for the AMCATS, while Volta recorded six saves for the Falcons.

The AMCATS will continue their three-game home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 22 in a 4:00 p.m. tilt with Rivier. The Falcons will travel to Johnson & Wales for a 3:00 p.m. game on Wednesday.
