Monks Nip AMCATS, 1-0

Paxton, Mass. – The Anna Maria College men's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by the visiting Monks of Saint Joseph's College (ME) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Monday afternoon. With the win the Monks improve to 6-6-2 (4-3-1 GNAC) while the AMCATS drop to 2-10-1 (0-7-1 GNAC).

The Monks tipped the twine at 17:34 of the first half. Sophomore Fabrice Iraduha (Portland, ME) dribbled in between the AMCAT defense and fed junior Zach Johnson (Westbrook, ME) down the left wing for the game winner and the 1-0 lead.

The AMCATS best chance of the first half came off a set play from a direct kick, captain Bryan Blomgren (Auburn, Mass.) headed a pass from Enco Lika (Worcester, Mass.) just over the cross bar. Netminder Scott Webster (Ocala, Fla) made five saves in the first stanza.

The two teams battled to a scoreless second half. Anna Maria's freshman Belwin Koduah had an open net in the second half but Monk's defender Jack LaFreniere (Alton, NH) made the defensive save to keep the AMCATS off the board.

The Monks dominated the stat sheet outshooting the AMCATS 34-14 and held the edge in corners 6-2.

Monk's keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) made five saves in earing the shutout, Webster posted 13 saves in the loss.

The AMCATS host Nichols College on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action starting at 4:00pm.
